We’re always on the lookout for a hairstyle with low-maintenance layers that look great with minimal effort. The dream is to roll out of bed, ruffle our hair and get on with the day, without a lengthy hairstyling routine.

You might have already swapped out your curlers for heatless headbands or stopped straightening your hair every morning in a throwback to the Y2K era, but there are always ways to improve the health of our hair without compromising on style.

Regular cuts are a great way to achieve this, and it might be time to consider adding some low-maintenance layers this summer. Charlotte Cave, hairstylist and the founder of two salons that bear her name, understands that when you’re trying to grow your hair this can feel like a daunting step.

“To layer or not to layer, in the age of longer locks that is the question,” she muses. “Do you feel your hair is falling heavy around your shoulders like a basset hound? Well now is the time to breathe life into it.”

Wispy, blunt or feathered layers are a great way to introduce texture to your hair without any heat. It gives more shape to the structure of your hair and can even help to frame your face.

Cave says that layers can help with styling, as they “lighten the weight of the hair, so if you’re straightening it gives a little fullness at the crown or if you’re waving it, your hair holds the wave as there’s less weight”.

“Think totally effortless in look and upkeep,” she adds. “It channels the French muse in us all!”
