In the market for a hair refresh? The ‘kitty cut’ has been hailed the hair trend of summer, thanks to its choppy finish and low-maintenance styling.

The demand for bob haircuts shows no sign of abating, with blunt, baroque, Italian and collarbone bobs all dominating hair trends at the moment. And it doesn’t stop there. The mixie cut is already up there with this year’s edgiest trends, while long bangs are set to rise in popularity.

But the haircut set to dominate the summer? Meet the ‘kitty cut’. Great for those in that awkward growing-out-my-bob phase, it’s a mid-length haircut that involves plenty of layers. Even better, your kitty cut is tailored to your hair’s texture, meaning it requires minimal styling for a low-maintenance approach.

Intrigued? We asked two experts – Lucy Jones, hairstylist at Larry King and Louis Byrne, editorial artist at L’Oréal Professionnel Paris – to break down everything about the trend. From how to style it to what to ask for in the salon chair. Here’s all you need to know to nail the look.

What is the kitty cut?

“The kitty cut is a version of the undone textured lob,” says Jones. “It’s a great style if you are growing out a bob and adds subtle shape and extra volume. Creating longer layers and a chunky face frame can accentuate the cheekbones, giving a feline effect to the eyes – hence the name.”

How do you wear the kitty cut?

“This cut is very versatile; it can be worn straight or curly,” says Byrne. “It looks great with added volume and will give you the ultimate swish.”

What is the best way to style the kitty cut?

“Undone and easy,” says Jones. “Use Larry King’s My Nanna’s Mousse, £22, to add plumpness and shine, using just your fingers to tease out natural texture under the hairdryer and finish with a mix of finishing cream and texture spray.”

Byrne says: “If you would like to wear this style straight, I recommend blow-drying your hair using a round brush or a diffuser. I also like to use rollers and L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni.Art Super Dust Powder, £18.55, for extra volume and bounce.

“If you wish to wear this cut curly, simply apply oil to the ends of your hair before going in with the L’Oréal Professionnel Steampod, £249, for a smooth finish. Ultimately your hair texture will bring out the best of this cut.”

What should you ask for in the salon to achieve the kitty cut?

“There are quite a few versions of the kitty cut, so any picture references would be recommended when going into the salon,” advises Jones.

Byrne adds: “Ensure you and your hairdresser are using the same language. Pick your top three images and use these as a guide for your stylist and let them advise you on how your hair texture will work best with the length and style.”
