Why you should get an Italian crop – the soft androgynous haircut that suits everyone

If you’re ready to take your bob one step further (and shorter), it might be time to try the Italian crop. Here, hairstylist Tom Smith explains why it’s trending, where to find inspiration and what to ask your hairdresser for.
One hairstyle that’s reigned supreme over the last couple of years is undoubtedly the bob. From the razor-cut to the more tousled butterfly. Whatever your style, there’s likely to be a cut for you. But if you’re starting to feel a little over the bob, it could be time to push the boundaries and explore something new – and this is where the Italian crop comes in. Shorter than a bob yet longer than a pixie cut, this in-between length is seriously wearable, giving that la dolce vita blend of glamour and laid-back edge.
“Inspired by Italian businessmen in the 60s, this haircut is a soft, androgynous and power-signalling style,” explains hairstylist and trend expert Tom Smith. “Swept strictly off the face or softly tousled, this look is strong yet unfussy. It’s ideal for a practical, business-like look or softened with a statement earring for a more high-fashion take.”
Whether you want to embrace its power and authority by tucking the length behind your ears to show off your cheekbones or prefer a softer touch with light face-framing around the fringe, this cut can be adapted to suit your features. “For a secure and confident wearer, this haircut oozes power and authority,” says Smith. “Higher foreheads can keep the look softer with some light face-framing, while those looking for a lifted, sculpted effect can sweep the hair back with volume at the crown.”
How to style the Italian crop
“It takes a foundation of product to keep the hair looking effortlessly swept off the face,” explains Smith. “Blow-dry clean, damp hair with a heat-protecting volume spray such as Olaplex Volumising Blow-dry Mist, brushing back from the face without any parting. Then, use a straightening iron to add bends or flicks if required. Once dry, position the hair into place and mist through a styling powder like Evo Haze to give maximum control at the root without making it obvious that product has been applied. Position as desired and finish with a mist of strong-hold hairspray.”
Whether you’re after a sharp, powerful look or something a little more relaxed and tousled, the Italian crop is a great, modern option that can be tailored to suit your mood. Here are all the inspiration pictures you need to screenshot and send to your hairdresser…
