The hydro-bob is easier to achieve (and pull off) than you might think

If you were unsure you’d be able to pull off a wet-look bob, we’re here to make you realise that you definitely can.

There’s no doubt about it: bobs are big news right now. Whether you go for the bottleneck chop, the Birkin or opt for a chic and very French ‘petit bob’, there’s one universal problem that comes with having short hair, and that’s how to style it.

Of course, a good cut shouldn’t take much effort to style, but if you want to mix things up a bit and are stuck for ideas, allow us to introduce you to the hydro-bob.

A style seen on the likes of Laura Harrier, America Ferrera and Charlize Theron, it’ll come as no surprise to discover that the reigning queen of bobs, Hailey Bieber, has worn her hair in this semi-wet look multiple times.

“Reminiscent of last year’s boy bob, the hydro-bob is an androgynous and editorial look drenched in gloss and moisture – and it’s incredibly practical to achieve,” says Tom Smith, hair stylist and trend forecaster.

You can either work with the bob you already have or, if you’re looking to cut your hair shorter, Smith says that the shape for this style can be tailored to the individual. “You can work with your own features and choose a length that sits anywhere between the lips and mid-neck,” he explains.

Then it’s the use of styling products that gives the hydro-bob the important wet-look finish. “The right products will provide definition and hold, making this a great option for those who like their hair to feel controlled and refined,” says Smith.

“You can even tuck it behind one – or both – ears, and it can be combined with a side parting or you can leave a couple of single strands loose at the front for a 90s-esque feel.”

What to ask your stylist for

As Smith explains, nourishing leave-in creams (like Olaplex No.6 Bond Smoother, £28, or Larry King Hair Care A Social Life for Your Hair, £12) are ideal for definition and hydration.

However, a great trick for anybody short on time is to combine your weekly treatments with the hydro-bob. “Simply style your hair with your favourite hydrating mask – not only will this provide you a semi-wet-look but it’ll also allow your hair to absorb all the nutrients at the same time,” he says.

Effective, efficient and very much on trend – what’s not to love?
