“I’m a beauty editor and these are the tips and products I swear by to keep my copper hair healthy”

If you’ve got red or copper hair and are struggling to keep it as vibrant and healthy as you’d like it, listen to these top tips.
My hair was nearly every colour of the rainbow as a teen. But as a grown-up beauty editor, one of my favourite hair colours was a vibrant copper shade. And while it was my favourite colour, it was by far the hardest to maintain at home. But I learned a number of tricks over the years about how to keep it in the best possible condition. That’s mostly thanks to my colourists – Jack Howard and John Alfred – being just a text message or voice note away for the best advice in the business.
I’m now back to my natural brunette roots, but I’m still using some of the tips I learned to keep my hair in top condition. If you’re struggling to maintain the health and vibrancy of your hair, I’ve asked top colourists for their favourite care tips and products.
Get regular touch-ups
If you’re not naturally copper, then getting root touch-ups will need to become part of your new routine. Every four to six weeks is generally what experts recommend because a) no one loves huge roots (unless that’s what you’re going for) and b) you risk getting hot roots (ie where your roots are brighter than the rest of your hair).
Don’t wash with hot water
You might need to channel your inner Wim Hof when you become part of the red hair club. “It’s important to rinse red hair with cold rinses, not too hot, as this will prolong the colour,” explains Christel Barron-Hough, Stil’s founder and creative director.
Don’t over-wash and over-dry
Feeling a bit lazy when it comes to washing your hair? If you’re red-headed (courtesy of hair dye), you have the excuse to skip it for an extra day because too much shampoo can fade your colour. Don’t over-wash when you don’t need to, which includes double shampooing (thoroughly shampooing once is enough to get the job done) and doing it daily can fade your colour fast. It’s also recommended you wait several days after you’ve had your hair freshly dyed before washing it at home. In addition, over-styling can dry the hair and make the colour fade faster. Try styling tricks like heatless curls instead of daily heat styling.
Use a colour-safe shampoo
Colour-safe shampoos are designed to preserve the vibrancy and life of your red hair while still doing a great job at cleansing your roots. The good news? There are lots to choose from.
The best hair products to maintain red and copper hair
Wella Professionals Care Color Fresh Semi-Permanent Colour Mask in Copper Glow
A colour-depositing mask is a great product that enhances the vibrancy of your colour at home. “This works as a conditioning mask after you shampoo your hair – it instantly refreshes copper hair in five minutes, making it really vibrant,” says Barron-Hough. This is a semi-permanent mask, so check with your colourist before using it to make sure you don’t interfere with your professionally applied colour.
L'Oreal Professional Metal Detox Sulphate Free Shampoo
If you live in a hard water area (that’s all of you, London) then you need to introduce L’Oreal’s Metal Detox range into your routine. It’s a clarifying formula designed to neutralise water-induced copper deposits, which can make hair colour appear faded and dull.

Hello Clean Purifying Shower Head
This brilliant shower head acts as a filter to remove water-soluble metals often found in hard water areas. This helps maintain your fresh, red hair colour.
K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask
This smart leave-in treatment helps to repair and prevent broken hair bonds caused by colour and chemical treatments making it a must if you dye your hair.

Moroccanoil Protect and Prevent Spray
It’s important to protect hair before heat styling, so using a spray like this is essential; it protects against UV and thermal damage to maintain the health and vibrancy of the hair. It also has Moroccanoil’s iconic scent, so makes your whole head smell beautiful.

Bleach London Reincarnation Mask
Add weekly masks into your routine if you have a vibrant hair colour. The Bleach London Reincarnation Mask is formulated for damaged hair and uses hydrolysed wheat protein to rebuild and strengthen hair bonds. Don’t over-use this mask though, and make sure to alternate between this and moisturising ingredients because there is too much of a good thing when it comes to protein haircare. Get the tub over the tube – it’s much easier to scrape out and use in the shower.
Color Wow Color Security Shampoo
Another hardworking shampoo that protects and enhances your colour. It also helps add an incredible shine to the hair, especially when used with the brand’s conditioner.
