Considering a hair refresh in the New Year? We list the haircuts, hairstyles and hair colours that are set to be everywhere in 2024…

It may sound like a bit of a cliche, but the New Year really is the perfect time for a hair refresh. Whether you’re looking for a new hair colour, a drastic cut or simply want to mix up your regular go-to hairstyle, there’s plenty of inspiration out there.

Following on from this year, 2024 will see bobs continue to dominate. However, our growing preference for low-maintenance hairstyles means we’re now stepping away from structured shapes and harsh ends, favouring choppy layers and voluminous roots instead.

In the world of hair colour, we’ll see the popularity surrounding the ‘Scandi hairline’ trend only get bigger. Intrigued? Read on to learn more and discover some of the other hair trends set to be everywhere in 2024…

The Scandi hairline

With 91.1 million views on TikTok alone, the ‘Scandi hairline’ trend blew up this year, and it shows no signs of slowing down as we head into 2024. This technique involves colouring just the baby hairs and forehead hairline a shade or two lighter than your natural hair colour. The result looks like your hairline has been naturally lightened by the sun and gives your face a softer frame, too.

Glass hair

You’ll have no doubt heard of glass skin; that trend is trickling down to our hair, too. Like the name suggests, glass hair involves hair that is so sleek and shiny that it resembles reflective glass. It’s similar to the liquid hair trend that was huge in 2022. To achieve glass hair, you’ll need to keep hair hydrated and healthy with plenty of masks and oils – but it involves applying heat, too, with straighteners, so don’t forget your heat protectant.

The Italian bob

The Italian bob first saw its revival in 2022, and now it’s back for the next 12 months. This haircut involves multiple soft layers that frame the face, but also adds tons of volume around the crown of the head. Suitable for all hair types, the key to this bob is allowing the layers to fall naturally – the perfect option for those looking for a low-maintenance hairstyle.

Low-maintenance layers

Speaking of low-maintenance, our time-poor diaries will see many of us requesting fuss-free hairstyles in the salon chairs. One of the most common ways to do this is opting for an extra choppy, layered hairstyle and letting your natural texture shine. This could be a shaggy bob, wavy lob or even a 70s shag cut with curtain bangs.

Preppy bob

You didn’t think we’d have a 2024 hair trends round-up with just one bob style, did you? Bobs have dominated hair trends over the last few years and the next 12 months will see more and more of us asking for a preppy cut. The go-to hairstyle for Hailey Bieber and another low-maintenance style, the preppy bob involves cutting your hair to jaw-skimming length with the weight at the end of the hair reduced for an effortless feel.

Wet-look hair

From Jason Wu and Sandy Liang to Anna Sui, Tom Ford and Miu Miu, wet-look hairstyles were all over the SS24 runways. There are two ways to approach this trend: a sleek, slicked-back finish that gives a just-stepped-out-the-shower shine, or a grungier, greasier, more dirty finish to give it some edge. Maybe it’s time to ditch that dry shampoo.

Ribbons

In the same way that balletcore and coquette make-up will be everywhere the next 12 months, this hyper-feminine trend will apply to our hair, too. Ribbons are going to be the biggest hair accessory of the year, and there are so many ways to try the trend, from adding one big bow to your hair to getting creative and weaving a ribbon through your plait, as seen at Christian Siriano’s SS24 show.
