Glossed ink is the blue hair trend we’re desperate to try (and it’s more wearable than it sounds)

Blue hair? For winter? It kind of is groundbreaking – and it’s not as scary as it sounds. Here’s what you need to know.

When you think of blue hair, you probably have flashbacks to the super bright box dyes you were desperate to use as a teenager but were never allowed – or was that just us? It’s also the sort of shade that your hairdresser has probably tried to talk you out of at least once in the past.

Fast forward a decade or two, and now you are in full control of your own dyeing decisions, it might still feel like a bold decision, but believe it or not, blue hair is having a real moment. Not only is it extremely cool, but it’s also a whole lot more wearable than it might sound.

In short, glossed ink hair is being described by hair stylist Larry King, Redken’s UKI ambassador, as a “midnight colour with subtle blue reflect” – and it’s also the reason why the #BlueBlackHair hashtag has 54 million views on TikTok.

The shade itself is one that’ll suit all hair types, but note that’s it’s one best achieved by your colourist who’ll use a toner, like Redken Shades EQ, on a dark brunette base to add extra dimension and depth.

Plus, we love that it’ll make hair so glossy that it’ll look fluid – which also plays into the high-shine trends we’re seeing a lot of recently.

Here, we’ve rounded up some serious inspiration – ranging from more obvious shades of deep, inky blue through to subtle, barely there tones that are only really noticeable when the light hits exactly right.
