We reached peak bob-mania in 2024, but this new haircut trend might just be a late entry for our favourite of the year.
It was a year defined by bobs. Whether it was the ‘shaggy’, the ’midi’ or the ‘power bob’, there’s no denying that getting the chop has been at the forefront of our minds in 2024. So it’s no surprise that we’re ending the year with yet another bob craze. In fact, it’s probably safe to say that we don’t think bob-mania is going anywhere in 2025.
The ‘gloss bob’ is the latest (and probably the last) haircut we’re squeezing in to wrap up the year. If you want to start 2025 with a fresh new ’do, here’s everything you need to know about this particular hairstyle.
“Shorter bobs have been very popular as of late, and for party season, it’s always great to style it differently to make an outfit look as sharp as possible,” says Neil Moodie, hairstylist and founder of Neil Moodie Studio. And the gloss bob – a neat, cropped style combined with a sleek shiny finish – adds a luxurious spin to the classic haircut.
The key to this cut is how you style it. “The gloss bob works on all textures. Even if your hair is curly or wavy, you can either blow it out smooth first or work with the natural hair texture to create the gloss look from within,” says Moodie.
To create the mirror-like shine, Moodie recommends first blow-drying your hair away from the face to create volume and then taking a generous amount of finishing serum or cream once dried – the latter being great for curly hair types.
To keep it in place, he recommends styling with a comb or flat brush, depending on your hair texture. For extra shine, add a coating of hair oil and lock it all in with a spritz of hairspray.
If you’ve got finer hair and the prospect of dousing it in oil has you itching to wash it seconds later, Moodie has a solution. “For fine hair, I would recommend using more a gel, instead of oil. While this will dry hard, it will still look glossy and shiny, and you can mist a light shine spray over the gel to get extra gloss,” he says.
