Looking to get a fringe? The ‘dove tail’ is the hair trend you need to know about

Fancy a chop but don’t want to venture into bob territory? Fringes are going to be big in 2025 – here’s the trendiest one of them all.

While the bob has reigned supreme in 2024, there’s no denying fringes have been subtly making a comeback too. We can all thank Sabrina Carpenter for our obsession with ‘curtain bangs’, but a new face-framing haircut is in contention to take the top spot in 2025 when it comes to fringe trends: the ‘dove tail’.

Unlike most haircut rends, the name doesn’t immediately give this one away, so we asked Louis Byrnes, L’Oréal Professionnel UK editorial artist, to explain. “This trend is all about face-framing with a fringe,” he says.

The shaping around the face is similar to what we love about curtain bangs, but this haircut has a bit more of a twist to it. “We are making a statement in 2025 fringes are getting shorter and wider for a modern yet very structured touch – maybe even a little bit punk.” They’re not quite micro-bangs but a lot shorter than the trendier fringes we’ve seen lately.

This blunt cut not only works with whatever hair length you opt for but it also has some additional benefits when it comes to switching up your look. Yes, we’re saying hello to volume with this trend. “Dove tails have more texture and layers to frame the face and enhance features,” says Byrnes. He adds that a bolder hair colour will be particularly helpful for this trend – especially for all the blondes out there.

Ready to re-enter the punk era? Here are some dove tail fringe examples to save as inspiration for your next haircut.
