Here’s everything you need to know about how to make a fringe work with your curls and coils, according to an expert.

From bobs of varying shapes and lengths to the halo cut, bang-centric hair trends of all textures are taking over in 2024.

Of course, that’s not to say that fringes are just a fad – far from it. But even though you can chop safely in the knowledge that your bangs will stand the test of time, they’re still a big commitment.

And if your hair is curly or coily, getting a fringe for the first time can come with an extra helping of worry, thanks to the fact that everybody’s curls are unique and have their own specific set of needs.

So if you’ve been thinking about braving curly bangs but aren’t sure where to start, we’ve got you covered with top tips from a hairstyling expert.

What style of bangs tend to work best for curly and coily hair?

Charlotte Mensah, founder of London salon Hair Lounge, tells Stylist: “Face-framing layers on curly/coily hair works best with bangs. If there is a big difference between your fringe length and the rest of your hair, the style can tend to look more dated than modern.”

What fringe styles work best for different curl patterns?

“70s-style fringes look great on curly and coily hair, and they suit most people,” explains Mensah, who’s also the founder of the Charlotte Mensah Manketti Oil product range. “The key is to keep the bangs long enough to allow room for shrinkage and have them personalised to you and your hair length.”

How to style curly bangs

“Twisting small strands helps your bangs look their best by encouraging the curls to sit where you want them,” says Mensah. “When your hair is wet, use some of your favourite styling products to twist them around your finger into the shape you like.”

What to ask your stylist for

“I recommend cutting the hair super blunt while it’s dry,” says Mensah, “because if the hair is wet, your strands will shrink up as they dry and look noticeably shorter. You should ask your stylist to start with a longer bang than you think you want. If your curly fringe is cut longer to begin with, you’ll have some wiggle room to adjust the length to your liking. And ask your stylist to add some shorter layers to help blend your bangs with the rest of your hair.”
