Meet the latest mid-length bob on the block, the clavi-cut. Discover how to perfect this style and even find some photo inspiration for your next appointment…
We are well and truly in our bob era, but if there’s one thing we all dread it’s growing out a short haircut. That is, until the clavi-cut came on the scene.
Taking its name from the clavicle, this hairstyle is specifically cut to the length of your collarbone to serve as a defined-length long bob.
Similar to the lob and the 90s voluminous bob, it’s ideal for those who want to join in the bob hair hype but without losing as much length off the ends.
It’s also the perfect mid-length hairstyle for anyone who is growing out a shorter haircut, Neale Rodger, style director at STIL says.
“The growing-out phase, especially around shoulder length, requires a lot of patience and you are very limited with which technique – layering, shaping, texturing – you can use,” he says. “This cut seamlessly bridges the gap from shoulder length to long. It’s a super versatile style as it allows the wearer enough length to wear in high or low ponytails and loose buns,” he adds.
“It also allows the wearer to try shorter looks by using styling tools to create waves or curls, which lifts the length into a textured bob length.”
How to style the clavi-cut
The clavi-cut mostly comes down to the lines it creates and Rodger says the key is to create a “strong, but slightly shattered, horizontal line” that sits parallel with the collarbone.
It compliments fine to medium-density hair and would suit soft layers that don’t impact too much of the hair’s length.
The ‘old money’ look is one that benefits from simplicity. Rodgers adds: “I would avoid face framing or ‘shaping’ around the front at this length, as you would detract from the main feature, which is the length sitting on the clavicle, and you would also round out the shape by pushing the length away from the front of the face and around the shoulders.”
If you’re ready to give this stylised grown-out bob a chance, here’s some much needed photo inspiration of the clavi-cut for your next salon appointment.
