In the world of trends, what goes around very much comes back around. And what’s coming back around now is a chunky highlights trend, the like of which we haven’t seen for about 20 years.
Yes, you read that right – chunky highlights are back in style.
For anyone who wasn’t in a position to embrace it the last time around, chunky highlights are pretty much exactly what they sound like. It’s like the money piece trend, but all over. Think Kelly Clarkson circa 2002 and Lindsay Lohan in 2003’s Freaky Friday.
These thick, bold, edgy highlights were relegated to fashion’s cringe closet for two decades, but now, thanks to the ongoing Y2K resurgence, they’re back with a vengeance.
Adam Carson, a colourist at Blue Tit East Village, tells Stylist: “Like anything in fashion, over the years trends are constantly being recycled. And when they come back, they’re always elevated.
“Y2K has been making a strong comeback for a long while on commercial and high fashion runways, with double denim, velour fabrics and prints and low rise jeans.”
So chunky highlights coming back is the next logical step.

Who suits chunky highlights best?
Carson says: “Anyone can have a chunky highlighted look. However, if you want to see strong silhouettes with ribbons of colour in your hair, it’s best suited for hair with minimal layering. If you’re looking for softer ribbons, it works great for hair with texture and movement.”
What should you ask your stylist for?
“I think if you throw keywords at your stylist like Y2K, 90s grunge and even Geri Halliwell – she’s a great reference. And also pictures. We love photos because they give us a great visual representation of what you like.”
And speaking of pictures…
