If you’re thinking of cutting your hair short and don’t want to go down the bob route, this is the hybrid haircut you need to have on your radar.
There’s no denying bobs have become our obsession over the past two years. Bobs have dominated the hair trend category in previous years, but with longer hair making a comeback and the rise in popularity of hybrid haircuts, we’re going to see more variety in 2025. Say hello to the ‘boxie’.
If our obsession with taupe smokey eyes and nude lipstick wasn’t enough to confirm the 90s was back, this new haircut certainly will. “90s hair is very trendy now; the mixture of different styles put together to make hybrid hairstyles comes from that era,” says Christophe Potin, artistic director and educator at Aveda UK.
He explains that the ‘boxie’ is part of this hair genre, as it’s a cross between a traditional pixie and bob haircut. Think of the trendy mushroom-shaped ’do that celebrities including Lily Allen have been spotted with lately, and what Demi Moore made famous in the late 80s. It’s not too dissimilar from the hybrid ‘crob bob’ we’ve seen rising in popularity lately.
It’s essentially the slightly longer length that you get with a bowl haircut, with the layered texture of a pixie at the roots – giving you a real zhuzh of texture and volume.
This nostalgia has made us think about our haircuts differently, says Potin. Gone are casual layers and shapeless blunt cuts, instead, we’re getting nitty gritty with the details. “Haircuts were more precise [in the 90s] so it’s good that shorter hair can have a revival and be more versatile,” he says.
This does come with a caveat though. “When hair is very short it needs frequent trims every five to six weeks,” Potin says to help the style keep its shape. He also says styling is required, particularly a paste to help give you a real 90s finish.
