Great for the warmer weather and easy to customise for different hair lengths, this is all you need to know about the bottleneck bob trend.

There’s no denying that bob hair cuts are everywhere right now. From the versatile oval bob to the angel bob that’s beloved by social media and the volume-boosting Barbie bob, there really is something for everyone, but if you haven’t quite found the one for you, then the bottleneck bob might be one to consider.

The bottleneck bob is inspired by last year’s popular trend for bottleneck bangs – an alternative to the grown-out, lived-in fringe we all love so much – and is a term that was coined by Tom Smith, hair stylist and trend forecaster.

“I originally coined the term to help describe the way in which bangs frame the face,” he tells Stylist. “It’s a sort of bottleneck shape: narrow and shorter between the brows, curving out and around the brow bone to the cheekbones, and then it often kicks in at the contour of the cheek.”

But the thing that makes the bottleneck bob so desirable? “It has a face-framing silhouette that can easily be customised to suit various hair lengths. It works particularly well on shorter hair and hair that’s past the shoulders,” explains Smith.

Elliot Bute, hair stylist at Hershesons Fitzrovia, concurs, adding that the bottleneck bob is a modern, edgy take on the traditional bob. “It’s a great one for summer – not just because the shorter length means there’s less hair to deal with. It’s also deceivingly versatile, so it can be easily styled into beachy waves or kept sleek and polished,” he says.

Versatile, ideal for warmer weather and easy to look after? This one sounds like our type of cut – count us in.
