Here’s everything you need to know about the black forest berry hair trend that’s set to be big in 2025, and some photo inspiration for your next appointment.

Following on from the cherry-hued hair trends that were so popular in 2024, it’s no surprise that one of the go-to hair colours for this season is set to be black forest berry.

It’s reminiscent of the viral cherry cola hair trend – and cherry, let’s not forget, remains one of Pinterest’s trending colours for 2025 – but this berry tone consists of rich red wine and deep plum shades and can be tailored to different depths depending on how the colour is used.

Whether the shade is blended into brunette as an accent or bathed from root to tip in berry, this versatile hair trend leans into a deeper hue and a palette often associated with autumn. Here’s everything you need to know about the popular style…

What is black forest berry hair?

For those unfamiliar with the look, Adam Russell, creative master at Josh Wood Atelier, explains: “It’s a new trend that goes against the more common approach that says you should go lighter in the spring. It’s definitely about embracing your darker brunette with purple hues.”

“It’s achieved by placing subtle – and not-so-subtle – purple tones, depending on how bold you’d like to be,” he adds.

It offers a gorgeous twist on cherry red hair: it’s incredibly warm, sultry and textured, which is why it has such a long-standing appeal. After all, black forest berry hair isn’t just for autumn.

What should you ask for in the salon?

If you have fair hair, it would be worthwhile discussing with your hairdresser how the tone will sit, especially if you want to return to lighter, sun-kissed tones in the summer.

“You should definitely book in for a consultation before deciding to go for the look,” Russell adds. “I would advise doing skin, eye and hair analysis to see if it would suit you.”

“It’s so popular because of how it makes the hair super shiny, glossy and great condition,” Russel adds, “but it’s definitely a colour you have to be sure of having and committing too. It’s so much harder colouring the hair dark then back to light. Then it is the other way round.”

Ahead of your appointment, it’s always best to collate some photo inspiration to show your stylist the type of forest berry hair that you’d like to have. We’ve saved you some scrolling time with a few options below.
