With the festive season nearly upon us, now is the time to switch up your hair colour. Here are the shades experts predict will be huge this winter.

Cosy season is well and truly upon us. Whether it’s dark evenings in with a hot chocolate and a good film or glugging mulled wine at the pub, winter does have its upsides. And especially so when it comes to your hair. There’s never been a better time to switch up your hair shade because you don’t have to worry about the sun ruining your precious colour.

Whether you’re pairing your snuggly winter knits with a vivid red or a pearlescent blonde, we’ve tracked down the top hair colour trends for winter to help you thrive during the festive season. Here are the trends hair experts think you should have on your radar this season.

6 best hair colour trends for winter 2024

Misty mocha

It’s prime hot chocolate weather, so there’s no better time to use it for hair inspiration. We know what you’re thinking: ‘Brunette hair for winter? Groundbreaking.’ But misty mocha is a twist on the wintry hue.

“Different from most shades of brown, which either take on a warm or cool tone, misty mocha is a neutral colour that blends several subtle shades of brown,” says Joe Hill, Aveda international technical hair colour manager. “The neutrality of misty mocha makes it a versatile colour with a lot of room for dimension, including creamy, silver highlights or muted, multidimensional, neutral tones,” he adds. Sounds almost good enough to eat.

Lacquered crimson

It wouldn’t be a winter hair report without a red hair trend in the mix, and this shade is as rich as red gets.

“Lacquered crimson is emerging as the season’s standout hue,” says Hill. “This rich cherry colour commands attention with its deep, luxe tones reminiscent of ripe cherries at harvest. The glossy, undulating waves showcase the precise placement of this alluring colour, exuding energy and passion,” he adds.

Oyster blonde

Blonde hair can often be overlooked in the winter months, but the oyster blonde trend proves that platinum hair should stay all year round.

Icy white and slightly pearlescent, this Scandinavian-esque shade inspired by the oyster shell is proof that you don’t have to go dark just because it’s winter.

Coral blush

Not quite pink and not quite blonde, this peachy blush shade is the antidote to gloomy winter mornings.

The warm orange tones perfectly blend with bleach-blonde strands to create a subtle gradient effect. If you’re not ready to take the crimson hair plunge, this is a great first dip in the redhead pool.

Fox hair

You didn’t think one shade of red was enough, did you? This burnt brass tone is more low-key than the fiery coppers we’re used to seeing this time of year, making it more wearable (and low-maintenance) than brighter red shades.

“Eighties red is back,” according to Zoë Irwin, creative director at John Frieda Salons. “It’s a mix between copper and a full red,” she explains.

Gilded blonde

If you want something slightly warmer than oyster blonde, this trend is a little more toned-down and natural-looking.

“A combination of beige and flattened honey hues that include shades like vanilla and taupe, gilded blonde is a soft, muted tone – not as yellow as traditional golds – making it one of the most universal and desirable blondes,” says Hill.
