Curly hair needs hydration like a roast dinner needs gravy – it’s utterly essential. These experts are drawing on their years of having or styling excellent hair and sharing their favourite moisturising products.
If you’ve got curly hair, and we’re going to assume you do if you’re reading this, you’ll know all too well how much moisture curls and coils need.
Thankfully, there are a lot of products out there to choose from these days, but that can also make finding the right things for your hair and its specific needs a bit tricky.
From green flags like shea butter and keratin to why so many people swerve sulphates, it’s a whole world to figure out.
And that’s not even taking into account the fact that everybody’s curls and coils are different.
That’s why we’ve enlisted some experts who are happy to share their tried-and-tested favourites, whether you’re navigating natural hair for the first time or just trying to give your routine a boost.

Cécred Hydrating Shampoo
“Growing up I had a toxic relationship with my 4C coils. It wasn’t until I was 37 that I leaned in and fell in love with my hair. As a fully fledged paid-up member of the Bey Hive, I was gagging to try Queen Bey’s new range. As always, Beyoncé more than delivered, and I love it. I’m particularly obsessed with this luxurious hyaluronic acid nourishing shampoo, which makes my 4C coils feel soft and juicy. The packaging and signature Temple Oud fragrance are all on point.”

Boucléme Curl Cream
“It’s taken nearly all my life for me to figure out what my curls love. Thankfully, I was introduced to Boucléme and its curl cream from a curl-friendly stylist. As a brand, it checks so many boxes for me. They’re a Black female-led business, cruelty-free, use responsibly sourced ingredients and, the major one, it works for my biracial curls. I first used the curl cream solely for styling after washing my hair. It essentially works like a powered-up leave-in conditioner, giving me soft, bouncy, quenched curls. I also love to mix it with some water in my misting bottle to create an instant curl reviver if I don’t have time for a full wash.”

As I Am Jamaican Black Castor Oil Water
“I’ve learned the hard way that even when my hair is in protective styles, it needs daily hydration to keep it healthy – otherwise the breakage is real come wash day. I don’t like putting anything too heavy on my braids to avoid product build-up, which is why this Jamaican Black Castor Oil Water is perfect for a quick refresh. Lightweight but with enough substance to give my hair a hit of moisture that lasts all day (it’s packing vitamins C and E as well as castor oil), a few spritzes are all it takes. Bonus points: it leaves my hands feeling moisturised and silky soft too.”

Camille Rose Curlaide Moisture Butter
“Camille Rose has been one of my absolute favourite brands since starting my natural hair journey over five years ago, and I still love it to this day. Its Curlaide Moisture Butter is one of my favourite products that I always stock up on. The ingredients are amazing and it can be used on wet or dry hair, which you don’t find with a lot of similar products. I love using it for twist-out styles and to keep my ends moisturised throughout the week after a wash’n’go. It also smells so good and always leaves my hair looking really healthy. It is quite thick and creamy so it works well for my afro curly hair but may not be suitable for someone who doesn’t enjoy heavier products on their hair.”

Nine Yards Never Dull Repair Treatment
“The Nine Yards Never Dull Repair Treatment is one of my go-to masks for replenishing moisture and enhancing curl definition. A wash day favourite, the protein-rich formula restores strength and shine, leaving curls bouncy and revitalised. It’s from an ethical, sustainable brand – and that’s important to me – and contains natural extracts of shea butter, coconut oil, green tea, aloe vera, keratin and wheat protein. It’s also free from parabens, sulfates and methylisothiazolinone (a kind of preservative). Often with curly hair, what’s left out is as important as what’s left in.”
