Bond repair takes haircare to the next level, thanks to the way the products target the chemical make-up of your strands. Here’s what you need to know about it, and the best products to shop for.

Bond repair has been a hot topic in the haircare world for some time now, and for good reason.

It’s less about building moisture or shine than it is about caring for the ties that bind your hair together on a microscopic level.

That’s why bond repair can help those with a range of hair complaints, from the chemically damaged to the naturally brittle.

What does ‘bond repair’ mean?

For the uninitiated, hair bonds bind the protein structures of the hair shaft together. Put simply: strong bonds = strong hair.

Trichologist Tiffany Hall tells Stylist: “In the haircare world, bond repair refers to the process of strengthening and restoring damaged hair bonds, which is particularly beneficial for brittle or chemically treated hair.”

What hair types stand to benefit the most from bond repair?

Hall, who’s also an educator at salon Taylor Taylor London, says: “Hair types that are prone to breakage, damage from heat styling or chemical treatments can benefit from bond repair efforts, as well as hair that’s vulnerable to hormone changes such as menopause and PCOS.”

What kind of ingredients should people look for for bond repair?

“Always look for these key ingredients when choosing your product: keratin, amino acids, and ceramides for effective bond repair,” Hall explains. “In-salon services will often use a professional bond builder to enhance the end result.”

How long should it take before you see results?

“Results may vary,” Hall cautions, “but noticeable improvements can often be seen within a few weeks of consistent use and following the recommended protocol suggested by the brand.”
