Bring together the best of both worlds with the banged bob. Here’s how to style this striking look, alongside some photo inspiration to take with you for your next salon appointment.
Two of our favourite hairstyles have merged to create a hot new hair trend: the banged bob.
As the name suggests, this particular bob is always cut with a fringe or curtain bangs reminiscent of Uma Thurman’s character in Pulp Fiction. It can be short, sharp and choppy or grown out and paired with curtain bangs.
The banged bob is a twist on the blunt bob or the French bob, as Jordanna Cobella, hairstylist and founder of Cobella Salon, explains. “There are different variations: the blunt bob with bangs; a layered or choppy bob with a choppy fringe; or a shag bob with a ‘barely there’ Suki Waterhouse-style fringe,” she says.
How to style a banged bob
“I always start with a prep product – curl cream, volume mousse or sea salt spray to get some grit and body in the hair – depending on the finish you’re after,” she says. “You can either diffuse dry, scrunch dry or flat clip dry the hair to encourage movement and for an effortless French-style finish.”
Don’t be disheartened if it takes a bit of practice to perfect; it might appear low maintenance, but a lot of effort goes into the final look.
Cobella recommends asking your hairdresser for a “tutorial on getting the most out of your natural hair movement” as they can recommend the right techniques and products to complement your hair type.
When it comes to the salon appointment, Cobella says: “Collect some images of bobs for reference so your hairdresser can decipher your preferred type, eg blunt, feathered, long, chin length or French flicked, and also of fringes so your hairdresser knows how deep your fringe should be. This will determine how it sits and how thick it needs to be.”
Try to choose images that have a similar hair texture to you, as it will depend on whether you have thick hair, thin hair, curly or straight how the hair sits when styled and cut.
