Nostalgia is back in fashion and this 90s hair trend is set to be everywhere this summer…
The bob haircut is back and better than ever in 2024. Bell-bottom bobs, slinky bobs, feathered bobs… there’s a style to suit everyone.
It’s versatile enough to be dressed up at the Met Gala (as demonstrated by Sydney Sweeney and Michelle Yeoh) and dressed down for your local coffee run. And while we’re embracing nostalgic 90s trends, including scrunchies, claw clips and dungarees, it’s hardly surprising that there’s been a revival of the popular 00s blunt bob style too.
A staple for It girls of the time, such as Winona Ryder and Jennifer Aniston, it saw women chop back their hair to chin length and choose a voluminous finish.
The cut has since had a resurgence ahead of the summer months as a chic bob haircut that’s quick and easy to style.
Nadia Foster, hairstylist and co-owner of Foster London, explains: “The 90s bob is an iconic hairstyle that has fluctuated from bold, blunt and one-length to soft and choppy through to asymmetric. More recently, it’s come to be known as the French bob and even the bottleneck bob.”
“It is usually worn with a fringe as it has a blunt base, although this varied throughout the 90s, with the asymmetrical bob becoming popular towards the turn of the millennium.”
How to style a 90s bob
If you already have a bob, you’re halfway there. After all, the secret to styling a bob comes down to the type of cut you’ve had at the hairdressers.
“Styling a bob should be effortless – the work has been done in the cut,” Foster continues. “Use a simple texture spray for a more textured look or working of the fringe if you have a French bob with a round brush for definition and softness.”
The length of a bob can vary from a long length that grazes the collarbone up to a cut just below the ear, so it’s worth having a particular cut in mind.
“I would always take a reference picture when asking for a bob as there are so many variations and choices,” Foster adds. “Softness of the bob seems to be key for now, with sloping necklines and soft fringes.”
