Hailey Bieber is one of the world’s most loved beauty and style icons – here she talks exclusively to Stylist.
There are few people in the world that we are more obsessed with than Hailey Bieber, so you can imagine how excited we were when we heard that her skincare brand – Rhode – was finally going to be available in the UK.
Following a successful launch in the US last year, the capsule collection of products – made up of the now-iconic Peptide Glazing Fluid, £29, alongside Peptide Lip Treatment, £16, and Barrier Restore Cream, £29 – is shoppable online from today.
We got to celebrate with the woman herself, where we chatted all things beauty, the origins of her brand and where exactly she gets her own inspiration from – plus she shared the ultimate foundation application hack that she learned from none other than Pat McGrath. So major, right?
Can you start by telling us a little bit more about Rhode and where the idea stemmed from?
I’ve always been super obsessed with skincare. My mom and my grandma are also big beauty skincare lovers and I feel like I learned so much from them. It was definitely always a dream of mine to have a beauty brand, and I think what made the most sense for me was to start that with skincare. It all happened at the perfect time because, you know, Covid hit, and I really had the time to sit down and think about what my beauty philosophy is, and that was how we landed on doing this curated edit line of essentials. You don’t need much to have a good skincare routine; you just need things that are simple, effective and have great formulas. So I was thinking about different parts of my life – like travelling – and if I was going on a plane, what would be my essentials? And that was how I landed on the three products that we launched with, because I need a great moisturiser, I need a great lip product and I need a great serum.
Does that approach to beauty extend into other areas of your life?
Yeah, it’s that thing of having one thing of everything that’s good. Having a line of essentials is really how I approach the way I dress – from the perfect leather jacket, the perfect white tee, the perfect dress, the perfect pair of jeans. You can really kind of live off of that edit forever – those things never go out of style, just like a good skincare routine never goes out of style. I just love things that are easy, simple and effective.
You worked with dermatologists on the formulations. Why did you want to do that?
It was something that was important to me because I don’t know what I don’t know. I didn’t go to school for this and even though it’s something that’s a huge passion, a huge interest of mine, there’s a reason why we have doctors and aestheticians and people who have dedicated their time and their life to this. And I wanted to make sure I had a group of people that could give me that expert-level input in the development process, and I’m so grateful. They have really helped bring this vision to life and we wouldn’t have created these products without them – I learned so much from working with them and I feel like my knowledge is so much broader now.
Your products are formulated with things like niacinamide and shea butter, but do you have any other favourite ingredients?
I love ceramides. They’re so good for strengthening the barrier and I love that in our Peptide Lip Treatment we have cupaçu – a really great hydrating ingredient. I’m happy that it’s being used in more places now. I love peptides, too; I love the plumping boost they give to the skin. I actually fell in love with niacinamide through the pandemic and I was so surprised by the effects it had on the skin. It’s a powerful, powerful girl that one.
You’ve worked with a lot of hairdressers and make-up artists over the years. What are the best tips you’ve picked up that you still swear by now?
There’s been so many different things, but the thing I notice the most is that make-up is always about skin preparation. So many people don’t realise how important it is, but skin is the canvas for make-up, and even just observing things like that kind of melted into my approach and philosophy as well. I also remember Pat McGrath had this thing where she would rub foundation into the palm of her hands before putting it on, and she would apply it with her hands directly onto the skin. I always thought that was such an interesting approach and it really does make a difference – it kind of creates this almost second-skin-like finish. I think she said it’s something to do with warming the product up first so it almost melts into skin differently. And I mean, she’s Mother, so we listen to anything that she says.
Are you always surprised at how much of an impact your choice of fashion, make-up and nails has on the world?
It is always very surprising to me – usually all the things I’m sharing are just my personal things that I find to be fun. Like, this is just what I do with my nails. Or this is just the way I like to dress, here’s my approach to make-up, to skincare. But I love sharing with people because I find that the beauty community is so fun. We’re all learning from each other and I feel very lucky to be in that space and I feel very embraced by it. The fact that anybody likes what I do is such a blessing; it’s so nice and it’s so fun, because in my head I’m just a girl. Obviously, I know my life is completely different to other people’s, but this is a big part of how I stay true to myself and I like sharing things.
You are a huge inspiration to a lot of people, but who do you look to for yours?
There are so many different people. In terms of style, impact and how they dressed that’s still relevant today is Princess Diana. Even now, generations later, we’re still so inspired by that. I have loved Rihanna’s style since I was a teenager too; I just love her, she’s the nicest person alive. And I’ve always been inspired by Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s style. She’s somebody who’s just a lovely human. She’s beautiful and I also think she’s so approachable and really firm in her beauty routine and her aesthetic. I’m also a big Pinterest scroller. There’s so much on there. The boards are endless and I find so much style inspiration on there. I might see somebody do something one way and then incorporate it differently into how I do it, and I think that’s what inspiration is really, right? Someone can see the way I do something and then make it work for them, and I think that’s so fun.
Do you have a beauty hack that you wish everybody knew?
I swear by mixing the Peptide Glazing Fluid with foundation to just kind of thin it out and create a second-skin finish. I mix it with Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow. I love Chanel make-up, I feel like they really knock it out the park. But yeah, that’s my biggest hack that I swear by and that I constantly use.
