Gareth Pugh: My style heroes

For the past five years, Gareth Pugh has been British fashion’s enfant terrible. Since his debut London Fashion Week show in 2006, the master of gothic futurism has broken all the rules, even sending models down the runway in inflatable PVC suits. But, his new collaboration with Mac is much more wearable, while still bearing all the incredible Pugh trademarks – the highlights of the collection are a heavyweight black chrome beauty powder (£44) and falselashes (£18) that look like they’ve been cut with an angle grinder. “Mac gave me creative control,”explains Pugh. “Even the inside of the products are like the printed lining of my accessories range.” To celebrate his new collection, Pugh talks Stylist through his style heroes.

NICOLA FORMICHETTI

Creative director at Thierry Mugler and Lady Gaga’s stylist

“Nicola saw my degree show, called some samples in for a shoot and they ended up on the cover of Dazed & Confused. That’s when [fashion collective] Fashion East got in touch with me to do a show.”

ALEX BOX

Make-up artist

“When Nicola styled my shows at Fashion East he introduced me to Alex. Her creativity and support inspired me to collaborate with Mac for the range. It’s been a long relationship and that’s the way I like to do things.”

RICK OWENS

Designer

“I briefly interned with Rick straight out of Central St Martins. I sewed in labels and made Lucinda Chambers [fashion director at Vogue] cups of tea. But it was a real eye-opener – a very steep learning curve.”

NICK KNIGHT

Photographer

“The great thing about Nick is that he’s interested in young people and their ideas. He invests a lot of his income into showstudio.com [his award-winning fashion website] where he gives people, including me, a platform to express their ideas.”

DAPHNE GUINNESS

Muse

“I make a lot of clothes for Daphne – she’s actually quite shy and uses her clothes as armour. She told me her ideal piece of clothing is a coat to make her invisible. My s/s 2011 show epitomised that, using silver material like camouflage.”
