Want an easy to upkeep bob hairstyle? The frayed bob is where it’s at…

If you thought the bob hairstyle’s moment had passed, it’s time to think again. The classic short style is still one of the most requested haircuts in salons – and for good reason. Whether you prefer a longer, shoulder-skimming length or something short and choppy, there’s a version to suit everyone. But if you’re looking for a fresh take on the trend, meet the frayed bob – the low-maintenance, high-impact style that’s set to be everywhere in 2025.

What is the frayed bob?

Coined by the team at Hershesons, the frayed bob is a “cool-girl, but nonetheless grown-up” take on the bob that’s all about embracing effortless texture, a cut that doesn’t feel too ‘done’. It has a slightly lived-in feel, with soft feathery ends that create natural movement.

Unlike sharp, structured bobs that can require meticulous styling, the frayed bob embraces a more undone, slightly mussed-up aesthetic. It’s the perfect balance between polished and relaxed – a cut that looks as good air-dried as it does with a bit of styling.

Keira Knightley debuted a version of the frayed bob on the Black Doves press tour last year, with natural bends and a subtly tousled finish. Sandra Oh has also been seen sporting an ultra-short take with a micro fringe, and model and influencer Nara Smith wears hers with flicked-out ends for a polished yet playful feel.

What to ask your hairdresser for

If the idea of an effortlessly cool bob sounds appealing, knowing what to ask for is key. “You want to talk about softness and movement,” says Nata Bumford, stylist at Hershesons Belgravia. “Ask your stylist for a cut with a strong outline, little to no layering and soft texturing at the ends for a natural, lived-in feel.”

The length can be tailored to suit your face shape, whether you prefer something hovering around the jawline or sitting just above the shoulders. If you’re after extra texture, subtle layering can help add dimension and make styling even easier.

As for upkeep? The beauty of the frayed bob is that it’s designed to grow out seamlessly. Unlike blunt bobs that require regular trims to keep their shape, this cut evolves over time, making it a dream for those who want a low-maintenance yet always-chic style.

Pair it with a salt spray (Hershesons Air Dry Spray is great) for an easy, air-dried finish or use a tong to add a few loose waves if you prefer a little extra styling.
