Forget about bright ‘terracopper’; this is why rust-coloured ‘fox hair’ is about to be everywhere this autumn.

We’re in full autumn Gilmore Girls mode, which requires a new seasonal colour palette. This means rich chocolatey nails, moody dark lipsticks and experimenting with red hair (we don’t make the rules). The shade of the moment? ‘Fox’ according to Pinterest, who’ve seen a 1530% surge in search for the trendy hair colour on the site.

It’s not uncommon to see red hair trending in autumn, but this particular shade goes against the more mainstream copper or blood-red hues we’re used to seeing. ‘Fox hair’, as you may have guessed, takes inspiration from our rust-coloured furry neighbourhood friends and is a more muted, cooler option than the fiery red shades that have gained popularity as of late. It’s the perfect in-between shade for brunettes who might be thinking of slowly turning up the heat for the cosy autumnal months.

“Eighties red is back,” according to Zoë Irwin, creative director at John Frieda Salons. “It’s a mix between copper and a full red,” she explains. Add 80s icon Molly Ringwald or Julia Roberts to your mood board for inspiration for this trend.

Irwin says that if you’ve tried the more vibrant Dua Lipa-esque reds, most people end up opting for this more muted tone as it’s more low maintenance to keep lively and vibrant. She’s seen clients opt for less spicy scarlet reds, which are more orangey, and instead go for more reddish crimsons.

Ready for a foxy hair transformation? Here’s the best ‘fox’ red hair inspiration to take with you to the hair salon.
