Double shampooing promises a longer-lasting clean. But does it really work?
If you find your hair gets greasy or weighed down quickly, you might’ve heard about the ‘double shampoo’ technique. While it’s not a new method of washing your hair (your hairdresser has likely been double shampooing your hair for years), the technique is currently gaining traction on social media as influencers share its benefits for giving your hair a weightless, super-clean feel.
But does it really make a difference or does it strip away the natural oils in your hair? We asked celebrity hairdresser Sam McKnight MBE for his thoughts on double shampooing and round up some of the best products to do it with below.
“The health and condition of your hair starts with cleansing and conditioning,” explains McKnight. “The right care will support your hair and your long-term scalp health. Instead of washing your hair on autopilot, invest a little extra time to get your hair cleansing ritual right for healthy, strong and shiny hair.
Cleansing twice ensures your hair is thoroughly free of product build-up, oil, pollution, sweat and other impurities. The first cleanse will remove all the above superficially and the second cleanse will deliver the shampoo benefits.”
Should you double shampoo every time you wash your hair?
“Not necessarily,” says McKnight. “It depends on how often you wash and the condition your hair is currently in. If you washed your hair the day before and haven’t used any products or exercised heavily, one cleanse is enough.
If it’s been a few days, you live in a city with pollution or you’ve used a few different hair products, a double cleanse should be your go-to. Think of it just like a make-up and skincare double cleanse.”
Should you use the same shampoo for both washes?
“You may absolutely use the same one. If you have heavy product build-up, use a more detoxifying shampoo first and select a more benefit-led shampoo for your second. So if you are after volume, prioritise your volumising care on the second cleanse.”
Are there any benefits to using two different shampoos?
“It could be more cost-effective [to use a cheaper shampoo for your first cleanse] if you are simply removing product build-up for the first cleanse,” explains McKnight. “Although it’s worth considering your scalp microbiome and choose an option that is kind to your scalp and supports its long-term health.”
Should you always follow up with conditioner?
“Yes! Whether you choose a rinse-out or leave-in – or even a light mist – a conditioner is formulated to deliver moisture through your hair and keep it healthy and shiny. Avoid your roots, draw your hair into a mid-height ponytail and apply only from the base of the ponytail down to the ends.”
