Cannes Film Festival 2012 has seen the celebrity elite rock the red carpet with a plethora of glamorous hairstyles. From chignons, ponytails and chic up-dos to vintage inspired waves, A-listers sported looks both old and new.
Jason Cocking, director of Lisa Shepherd London and celebrity hairstylist to the likes of Cat Deeley and the Olsen twins, gives Stylist his verdict on which actresses worked the best styles and how to re-create the look...
1. Naomi Watts
I love Naomi’s straight locks. So simple, but they work perfectly with the simplicity of the dress, creating an overall look that clearly flows.
Get the look: All that’s needed is just a simple blow dry, but be sure to use the Kérastase Cristalliste shampoo and serum range for the perfect look.
2. Lara Stone
Lara sported cover shot hair. Simple flowing locks with a trend led centre parting were a great look to rock with a bold silver dress.
Get the look: Create a centre parting in wet hair and blow dry straight. Use curling tongs to make loose waves; these will not only add movement, but also body to the look. Finally spritz with Clynol Dust spray to secure.
3. Eva Longoria
Eva really stole the show at Cannes. Her chocolate brown hair and shimmering caramel highlights worn in a bouffant up-do with strands in side-swept bangs made for an overall image of pure elegance.
Get the look: Elnett hair spray is a must for this look and will ensure it’s held in place. Backcomb hair with a Mason and Pearson brush, then twist and push up to create height.
4. Lily Cole
Lily was one step ahead of the game rocking a cute curly Gatsby inspired look. Her adorable strawberry blond tousled bob looked fab paired with her smoky eyes and porcelain skin.
Get the look: Spray hair with heat protectant and pin up leaving the bottom section loose. Take individual sections of hair and wrap around tongs, alternate curling direction to make for a more natural look. Break up curls with fingers and spray with finishing gloss to hold.
5. Cheryl Cole
Cheryl’s choice to sport her lustworthy locks in one of this season’s hottest hair trends was a fab option. The side sweep and vintage inspired waves made for an effortlessly chic and super feminine look.
Get the look: Begin by creating parting in damp hair. Once positioned blow dry hair straight. Separate hair into medium sections and curl each section tightly. Once curled gently brush out hair to create bigger, looser Hollywood waves. Spritz with spray and secure with grips.
6. Kirsten Dunst
I love this gorgeous girly look. Her sleek middle parting paired with floral, beaded Dolce hair band and a wispy soft coronet of braids left her looking young and precious. A great use of the hair accessory!
Get the look: Prep hair with Clynol Powder Punch as this gives the look more added texture. Create a side parting at the front of hair and a centre parting at the back of head. Split hair into sections, randomly twist and pin up leaving ends free. Finally entwine hair accessory into locks to make for an ultra-romantic look.
7. Lana Del Rey
Lana’s side part and cascade of glamorous, loose tumbling waves were a true red carpet blow out. The high-shine finish enhances the reddish colour of her glossy lengths making them the perfect accessory to her Cannes 2012 ensemble.
Get the look: Section off hair and create waves using curling tongs. Take a big GHD brush and brush through waves to create the Hollywood look. Spray roots with volume spray and finish with spray to add a high shine.
8. Tilda Swinton
Tilda has got the tone just right, sporting a look that’s bang on trend. Her soft true pastel blonde locks styled up into a unique and striking quiff makes for a true Swinton style.
Get the look: Section off hair from the forehead back as far as the crown. Roughly blow dry the section of hair from the front to the crown and lift the roots to create volume. Backcomb hair from the front to the back to leave a smooth finish. Once done take a Mason and Pearson brush and smooth over the top. Finally, style rest of hair and spritz with spray to create the perfect quiff finish.
9. Kelly Brook
Kelly’s big up-do made her look like a true 1950’s Erin Wasson style glamour girl. The colour and slightly undone look worked perfectly against her busy, more complex dress.
Get the look: Spray front of hair with hairspray and backcomb. Once backcombed gather hair at the back of head and secure with an elastic. Once again spray ponytail with hairspray and backcomb to create volume needed for the bun. Twist the end of ponytail and secure under the elastic. Finally pin to head with grips to secure.
10. Diane Kruger
(pictured with boyfriend Joshua Jackson)
Diane’s chic ponytail is undone, not too sleek and works well with her bold pink dress.
Get the look: Roughly blow dry hair to create volume. Curl hair softly to create texture and give the look some body. Backcomb hair gently and pull back into a ponytail. Finally spray Elnett hairspray onto ponytail and run hands through hair to create a more casual feel.
