Silver trousers may be trending, but the unsung metallic’s spring/summer 2023 takeover is spilling over into the beauty world, too.
In the battle over which metal captures the hearts and attention of fashion’s mightiest, silver is the undisputed champion this season. Whether it was born out of a post-pandemic craving for glitz or just a rediscovery of fashion’s relatively unsung metallic hue, silver dominated the spring/summer 2023 catwalks from Gucci and Versace to Chanel and Valentino.
The message is clear, and like most catwalk motifs, the trend hasn’t stopped at clothes. Usually a festive season-only manicure, nail polish is piggybacking on silver’s fashion takeover for an everyday dose of metallic shimmer – think grown-up, rather than tin man.
Here, we’ve rounded up the best nail polishes for an at-home silver wash – from subtle sparkle to full-coverage metallics…
Nailberry Oxygenated Nail Lacquer in Silver Lining
With an ‘oxygenated’ formula designed to leave your nails less dry and damaged than typical polishes, Nailberry’s low-key silver gives a frosted effect that’s a happy medium between flat colour and full-on glitter.
Shop Nailberry L’Oxygéné Oxygenated Nail Lacquer in Silver Lining at Nailberry, £16
Essie Nail Polish in Apres Chic
Essie’s wide, rounded brushes make it easy to recreate professional-looking neatness around the cuticle with no rogue blobs. Light-reflecting shimmer + full-coverage metallic = a high-impact manicure that will catch your eye all week.
Nails Inc Plant Power Vegan Nail Polish in Eco Glow
If full-on silver isn’t your thing, Nails Inc’s take on the trend is for you. Apply two coats of this sheer, reflective gloss for a cool-toned version of lip gloss nails.
Shop Nails Inc Plant Power Vegan Nail Polish in Eco Glow at John Lewis, £9
Manucurist Nail Polish in Diamant
Clear polish mixed with flecks of fine, silvery glitter: Manucurist’s quick-drying polish can be worn alone so the pale parts of your nails are still visible, or layered over a creamy neutral for a full-coverage coating.
Rimmel 60 Seconds Glitter Nail Polish in Silver
If you always find yourself with a minute-long window to paint your nails, this is for you. Rimmel’s 60 Second formula is much-loved for a reason – the quick-drying polish is perfect for even the most last-minute manicures.
Shop Rimmel 60 Seconds Glitter Nail Polish in Silver at Superdrug, £3.99
OPI Jewel Be Bold Collection Nail Lacquer in Go Big Or Go Chrome
OPI has made our disco ball nails dream a reality – this spangly polish is where the glittery/metallic Venn diagram intersects. Paint it on for a night out and prepare to still be admiring it mid-week.
Shop OPI Jewel Be Bold Collection Nail Lacquer in Go Big Or Go Chrome at Lookfantastic, £14.90
Mavala Cyber Chic Nail Polish Collection in Cyber Silver
Mavala’s raison d’être just makes sense. Its bottles are smaller than average but with good reason: how often do you make it to the end of a polish before it does gloopy? Around a third of the size of a standard bottle, with this one, you might just finish it.
Shop Mavala Cyber Chic Nail Polish Collection in Cyber Silver at Feelunique, £5.44
