Taking care of your teeth is trending. From microbiome mouthwashes to dentist-approved tools, oral care has had an upgrade. But do you need an oral care wardrobe?

How many skincare products do you own? What about make-up, hair care, body care and fragrances? It’s probably quite a few. But when it comes to our teeth, the number of oral care products we use is generally much smaller. There’s your toothbrush, of course, and if you’re really diligent, maybe you floss and use a mouthwash. But that’s probably where your oral care routine ends, right?

Well, it’s time to make room in your bathroom cabinet because taking care of your teeth is officially ‘in’, and the oral care market is booming. Gone are the days when a manual toothbrush was enough. Now, there are tech-savvy toothbrushes connected to apps, microbiome mouthwashes and tools that make you feel like you’ve just stepped out of the hygienist’s chair.

But do we really need an oral care wardrobe? “As a dentist, I’m thrilled to see a growing interest in oral care and the rise of new brands and products focused on improving dental hygiene,” says Dr Stephen Dodd, dentist and owner of Ringway Dental. “This trend signifies a positive shift towards prioritising oral health, which is essential not only for a beautiful smile but also for overall wellbeing. However, while it’s encouraging to see people invest more time into their oral care routines, I think it’s important to strike a balance and remain informed about the necessity of some of the products being marketed.”

Which oral care products are most important?

When it comes to knowing which products are must-haves and which can be added extras, Dr Dodd explains that the following three products will always be recommended:

  • An electric toothbrush, such as Oral B Pro
  • Interdental brushes for flossing, such as TePe
  • A fluoride-containing toothpaste, such as Sensodyne

“These are the foundation of a good oral health routine. Of course, there are products like tongue scrapers that can help with breath, but they’re not essential – more of a nice to have. The same goes for water flossers and mouthwash. Again, nice addition but not strictly necessary.”

Like most things, balance and the basics are important. “While it’s fantastic that people are enthusiastic about their oral care, not every trendy product is necessary. The basics – brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, flossing, and regular dental check-ups – remain the foundation of good oral hygiene. New products can complement these habits but should not replace them. Ultimately, while embracing new oral care products can be beneficial, it’s essential to stay informed and prioritise products with scientifically backed benefits. Regular dental visits are also irreplaceable for personalised advice and professional care.”
