Making changes to your beauty routine for summer? Here are the best new products to do it with…
I don’t know about you, but heatwaves make me question every element of my daily routine. Outfits you once considered lightweight suddenly feel stifling, switching on the oven – let alone cooking anything like a Sunday roast – is inconceivable without turning your flat into a furnace and any footwear that isn’t Birkenstocks or Tevas might as well be banished under the bed.
While our beauty routines may not see such an obvious overhaul, there are some subtle tweaks that can make your skincare, make-up and haircare lineup much more suited to warm weather. And, happily, beauty brands are accommodating, with a roster of nourishing, lightweight textures and glow-giving formulas to try.
This month, I tested a new hydrating sunscreen that didn’t cause breakouts, a bond-repairing hair oil to revive dry ends and a summery, herbal candle that will freshen up any room you burn it in. Plus, a new lip oil that’s sure to become a viral sensation…
Drunk Elephant A-Shaba Complex Eye Reform Serum
With vitamin A and peptides to smooth the skin around the eye, this anti-oxidant-rich cream is lightweight enough to layer under moisturiser without feeling sticky and hydrating enough to nourish.
Shop Drunk Elephant A-Shaba Complex Eye Reform Serum at Cult Beauty, £56
Dermatica SPF50 Photo-Damage Defence Sunscreen
Fragrance-free and lightly hydrating, this non-greasy SPF50 cream is ideal for warm days when sun protection is key. Apply using the two-finger rule to measure the quantity you’re applying to ensure full protection.
Shop Dermatica SPF 50 Photo-Damage Defence Sunscreen, £15.95
Jones Road Gel Bronzer
If you’re someone who loves cream bronzer during the summer, this gel formula is the perfect next step. Blend into your cheeks and up onto your forehead with fingers or a brush for a natural-looking wash of colour.
Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair Moisture + Damage Defence Leave-In Treatment
While days spent in the sun are good for the soul, they can often be bad for hair, which is why summer is the perfect time to treat drier hair textures to an added boost of moisture. With a blend of argan, coconut and rosehip oils, this cream helps to reduce the appearance of split ends.
Shop Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair Moisture + Damage Defence Leave-In Treatment at Cult Beauty, £28
Gisou Lip Oil
Lip oils may be trending, but I have a feeling the category might be about to welcome a new star – Gisou’s honey-infused formula gives the lips a subtle golden shine, while nourishing them with hyaluronic acid and grapeseed oil.
Chantecaille Real Glow Highlighter
Always find yourself wanting to look dewier in summer? Us too. Chantecaille’s new limited edition highlighting powder not only has display-worthy packaging, but the finely milled powder will add a dusting of glow to the high points of your face.
Liz Earle Skin Repair Hydrating Serum
Lightweight but seriously hydrating, with hyaluronic acid and niacinamide, if you like to forgo moisturiser and skip straight to SPF when the weather is warm, this is the serum to do it with.
K18 Molecular Repair Hair Oil
With a heat-protecting formula created for those who want to reduce flyaways and increase shine, this lightweight oil helps to repair bonds in the hair, making it look healthier over time.
Gloved Moisture-Replenish Hand Sanitiser
I didn’t think hand sanitiser could be an exciting purchase… until this. The cedarwood fragrance smells like an expensive perfume and, unlike other formulas, it doesn’t leave my hands feeling dry – my newest festival essential.
Ruth Mastenbroek The Intrepid Herbalist Candle
From one of the UK’s only independent female perfumers, this refreshing candle contains a herbal blend of rosemary, thyme and lemon – perfect to light on even the warmest of summer days.
