Nothing says cosy winter evenings quite like lighting a candle – here’s our round-up of the best ones to treat yourself to.
I’ll be honest: there’s not much that can compare to the sheer joy that comes with lighting a scented candle for the first time. I’m not somebody who has them lit all year round; I see them as more of a winter thing, so when the festive season arrives, I like to go all out.
Call me a cliche, but I love to have a candle lit when it’s dark, cold and probably rainy outside. The low-lit lamps are on (because we love some ambience around here), the blankets are out and I’m about to hit play on any one of my go-to comfort films. In an ideal world, I’d have just been out for a roast dinner, there’d be a glass of red wine on the go and I’d probably have a boyfriend and a log fire in the vicinity, but let’s not get too carried away here.
But even when that dream set-up isn’t possible, I still love to light scented candles. Maybe it’s a way to romanticise my life, but I have one burning as I type this (Nest’s Pumpkin Chai and it’s every bit as delicious as it sounds) and I have a cupboard full of unlit jars that I’ve collected over the years that I’m slowly making my way through.
There’s just something so comforting about a flickering flame and the all-consuming scent of Christmas that slowly fills the room. It feels nostalgic and instantly puts me in a good mood. I genuinely think candles are one of life’s little joys that we should all enjoy, so if you want to take a leaf from my book and embrace the Christmas season in its entirety, here are a few of my go-to favourites that I wholeheartedly recommend…
Jo Loves Christmas Trees candle
Consider this the candle that sparked my love affair. One sniff is all it takes for this candle to transport me back to my childhood, where I’m putting the Christmas tree up and dancing around to the one Christmas album CD that we had. It’s pure joy in every way.
Acqua di Parma Bosco candle
Aside from the jar, which is inspired by good luck charms around the world, I am fully obsessed with this scent. It gives me cold winter’s day vibes – you know, walking through a snowy forest on a crisp morning, wrapped up warm and the sun low in the sky. It’s all pine needles and woody fir trees, and there’s a beautiful hint of freshness thanks to the added eucalytpus notes.
Goutal Une Forêt d'Or limited edition scented candle
This candle reminds me of going home for Christmas as an adult; it’s the one I always take home for my mum and we burn it each evening while we cosy up and watch TV. Notes of fresh orange and tangerine alongside pine make it brighter than some Christmas candles, and that’s one of the reasons I love it so much.

SpaceNK Shimmering Spice candle
A firm Christmas must-smell. SpaceNK first launched its festive candles a few years ago and they do not disappoint. Sitting on the slightly more affordable end of the spectrum, Shimmering Spice is a delicious mix of cinnamon, cedar and allspice.
Jo Malone London Orange Bitters candle
A great option for daytime burning, Jo Malone London’s Orange Bitters is bright and happy, yet it still feels festive. Bitter orange is combined with sandalwood for a subtle nod to the festive season.
