From the mascara everybody loved to the perfect glowy-not-shiny foundation, discover Stylist’s make-up favourites from the year…
For many of us, make-up is our first entry point into beauty. Transformative, but also a popular form of self-expression, discovering new make-up products is always joyous. Which explains why this category was a hit with our testers – and why it was also the area that caused the most debate.
From the ultimate eyeshadow palette to the lash-boosting mascara that went down a treat with everybody who tried it, our make-up category is packed with so many brilliant beauty buys that fast became staples in our routines.
After months of trialling and testing cosmetics formulas – considering wearability, longevity and everything in between – these are the Stylist Best Beauty Awards winners that we deem worthy of a space in your make-up bag…
Best Foundation: Mac Studio Radiance Serum-Powered Foundation
“As somebody who is a staunch fan of Mac’s Studio Fix Fluid, I was slightly sceptical that this new formula could live up to its predecessor,” says Stylist’s beauty director Hanna Ibraheem. “But I’m completely sold. It offers the same medium buildable coverage I love, evens out my skin tone and doesn’t crease come 3pm. Even better, the glowy (but not shiny) finish makes my complexion look healthy, even if last night’s martinis mean that isn’t the case.”

Best Tinted Moisturiser: BareMinerals Complexion Rescue Natural Matte Tinted Moisturizer Mineral SPF 30
BareMinerals has stood the test of time as a brand that knows how to care for your complexion, and this summer launch placed oily skin in the spotlight. “This tinted moisturiser was my holy-grail base product this summer,” says Stylist contributor Darcy Brown. “It completely mattifies any excess shine but, unlike other oil-free formulas, leaves my skin radiant with no dry patches.” The formula blends skin-loving squalane, hyaluronic acid and marine botanicals to control oil production whilst boosting hydration.
Best Primer: Glow Recipe Strawberry BHA Pore-Smooth Blur Drops
If you’re after seamless make-up application, this clever primer is a no-brainer. It contains actives including BHAs and strawberry enzymes, both of which are proven to soak up excess sebum without stripping your skin of essential moisture. On application, it offers an instant blurring effect, while its pillowy-soft consistency strikes the perfect balance between mattifying and maintaining your skin’s natural radiance.

Best Under-Eye Concealer: Haus Labs Triclone Skin Tech Hydrating + De-Puffing Concealer
After the major success of its Triclone Skin Tech Foundation, Lady Gaga’s Haus Labs thrilled fans when it brought out a concealer version. Much like its sister product, the concealer is formulated with fermented arnica, an ingredient known for its ability to battle environmental aggressors, while caffeine helps to de-puff. As for coverage, it’s medium buildable, meaning it’s perfect for everyday use or a full glam look, and comes in 31 shades.

Best Setting Powder: Huda Beauty Easy Bake and Snatch Pressed Brightening and Setting Powder
Setting your base products makes all the difference to whether your foundation and concealer lasts. But pick the wrong formula and it can cause them to crease more quickly, too. Huda Beauty’s new setting powder is finely milled into a silky-soft texture that’s also sweat- and humidity-proof (even the heatwaves earlier this year were no match). Available in eight shades, it leaves a blurred finish without completely blocking out depth and dimension on your face and does a great job of mopping up any excess oil.

Best Setting Spray: Lisa Eldridge Skin and Makeup Enhancing Mist
“I had high expectations for this setting spray, mainly because the packaging is so beautiful,” says Natasha Gandotra, Stylist’s head of digital marketing. “Luckily, my definitely-judge-a-book-by-its-cover attitude was right in this case. I started the day by spraying it on top of my just-applied make-up, which gave me an instant dewy glow. The light mist didn’t feel like a heavy downpour, as I’ve previously experienced with similar products. I proceeded to spritz it on my face throughout the day. It helped me look and feel fresh, despite spending a few hours with brows furrowed in front of a screen in the office.”

Best Bronzer: Nars Laguna Bronzing Powder
Ever since it launched, you’d struggle to find a make-up bag that doesn’t have Nars’ Laguna Bronzer in it. So the beauty world was abuzz when the brand announced it would be expanding the Laguna franchise. Now available in nine shades, it can be used to bronze and contour. “The packaging is sleek and easy to fit into a small bag,” says features editor Hannah Keegan. “I love the colour (01 works for me) – as someone who is pale, I often veer away from bronzers but this blends out really nicely. Plus, it lasts ages!”
Best Blush: Armani Beauty Luminous Silk Glow Blush
Expanding on its iconic Luminous Silk range, Armani Beauty has finally bestowed upon us blushers that deliver a flush of colour with the same level of signature glow. “I found this blusher lasted the whole night without any touch-ups and it really blended well with my other make-up,” says senior campaign product Sarah Jones. “I used shade 10 Intimate, not too pink or too peach, just perfect for an ultra-natural finish.”
Best Highlighter: e.l.f. Halo Glow Highlight Beauty Wand
You will have likely seen these Beauty Wands all over your social media feeds – and for good reason. Stylist’s social media lead Sophie Boyden has no complaints: “The texture is really lightweight; it’s easy to get a small bit of product out via the cushion applicator, apply and build it up for a more intense glow.” Dot it along the high points of your cheeks and your skin will catch the light all day long. Costing just £9, if you buy just one product for highlighting, make it this.

Best Brow Gel: Jones Road The Brow Gel
At first glance, you’d be forgiven for thinking Jones Road’s brow gel looks more like a mascara. It has a slightly larger spoolie brush than traditional brow gels – but this only makes for faster, easier application. “I liked how natural it looked – it wasn’t at all crispy or wet-looking, just gave a nice flexible hold,” says Stylist Extra writer Holly Bullock.
Best Brow Pencil: Kosas Brow Pop Nano
Stylist’s event manager Vivienne Gawley admits that she’s “lazy” when it comes to eyebrows – making her the perfect person to test this category. “I was super-excited to try out this Kosas product because the thin nib, which measures just 1mm, looked like it would create hair-like strokes that weren’t heavy or blotchy. It allowed me to draw fine lines where I have gaps in my brows and generally make them look tidier.”
Best Eyeshadow Palette: Vieve Soul Shadows
Filled with matte, shimmer and sparkly textures, these hero quads equip you with all you need to perfect any eye look. “The shades are highly pigmented, so a little goes a long way,” says email content editor Annie Simpson. “It also really doesn’t budge. I tried to rub some off, and it wouldn’t move! Nor did it settle into creases or smudge onto my eyelids.” Housed alongside a conveniently-sized mirror, you can’t go wrong with this one.
Best Liquid Eyeliner: Revlon ColorStay Micro Easy Precision Liquid Liner
Finding your go-to liquid liner is a tricky task. The application needs to be easy, and after all that hard work, you’d like to trust it will stay put. Look no further than this pen to make a wing as simple as can be. The precise 0.1mm micro tip flexes for an effortless application that won’t tug the skin.

Best Pencil Eyeliner: Rare Beauty Perfect Strokes Longwear Gel Eyeliner
Fast-drying eyeliners leaving you with little blending time? We’ve all been there. This creamy formula glides on like a treat and leaves you with just the right amount of time for blending, smoking and perfecting to create a seamless eye look with impressive definition. Its twist-up applicator controls the tip, and a built-in sharpener reshapes it for precise application every time. Once dry, it won’t budge all day.

Best High-End Mascara: Fenty Beauty Hella Thicc Volumizing Mascara
To put it simply: everybody who tried this mascara loved it. One fan, deputy digital editor Ellen Scott, sings its praises: “It delivers exactly what it says on the box – super-thick, dramatic lashes. I love the brush and the formula; this is my new go-to mascara.” Shadé Owomoyela, junior commercial writer, adds: “I wear it regularly now – I always reach for it when I’m not wearing falsies. It does a great job at lengthening and separating lashes for a ‘fanned out’ look.” Even beauty director Hanna can’t stop recommending it to everybody.

Best Highstreet Mascara: Max Factor Masterpiece 2 In 1 Lash Wow Volume & Length Mascara
“I’ve seen mascaras that are dual-ended or have a long list of promises, but never have I seen one that allows you to change the length and shape of its wand,” says beauty director Hanna. “Max Factor has created an innovative wand that changes from a long ‘lengthening’ brush to a shorter ‘volumising’ one with a simple twist of its handle. It wears well, too – even after getting caught in sun, rain and strong winds (all in one day, because Britain), it didn’t flake, smudge or leak down my cheeks.”

Best Long-Wear Lipstick: Shiseido Technosatin Gel Lipstick
Lipstick feels right in winter, but not when you’re dragging it over chapped, cracked lips. Enter Shiseido Technosatin Gel Lipstick, which “feels like you’re wearing the best kind of buttery, soothing, hydrating balm”, says Stylist contributor Moya Crockett. “It has a casually radiant, comfy finish that’s sheeny, rather than glossy or sticky. And the colours are excellent – I liked shade 402 Chatbot, a pale peachy-pink that I’ll wear with a cat-eye for a modern take on a 60s look.”
Best Lip Gloss: Merit Beauty Shade Slick
Allow us to introduce you to your new favourite lip product. Stylist’s acting art director, Poppy Malby, finds no flaws: “If I had to choose something I didn’t like, it would be how addictive it is!” She uses it as both a daily gloss and nightly lip treatment thanks to its impressive ingredient list; rosehip oil, shea butter and squalane all work to condition the lips, create a healthy skin barrier and lock in moisture. It’s available in 12 hues and two different finishes, with zero hint of stickiness.
Best Lipliner: Sculpted by Aimee Line & Shine - Lipliner & Gloss Duo
If you want your lipstick to last all evening, this will help. The swivel-up pencil is ideal not just for outlining your lips, but colouring them in, too. Once the creamy texture dries down, it won’t budge – but if you like to blend your lipliner out slightly, you have a few seconds of playtime. Even better, the other end has a tinted gloss that matches your liner perfectly.

Best Nail Polish: Chanel Le Vernis Nail Colour
“The soft brush spread out to cover most of my nail, meaning I didn’t need to apply multiple coats,” says Stylist’s marketplace manager Hayley Peller. “And the consistency of the polish isn’t thick, so you’re guaranteed a streak-free paint job. My at-home manicure lasted two weeks without chipping, which was a result.”
