Affordable, effective and beauty editor-approved make-up – what more could you ask for?
If there’s one valuable lesson I’ve learned from a decade working in the beauty industry, it’s that a higher price point doesn’t always mean better quality.
Don’t get me wrong, I love getting my hands on a new Tom Ford eyeshadow palette, a Chanel lipstick or a Dior bronzer as much as the next person. But recently, while trialling the new Contour & Highlight Palette from Collection Cosmetics, I was so impressed with its formulation and price (it’s just £6.99!) that it reminded me just how great some of those more affordable beauty buys can be.
Plus, as somebody who recommends products for a living, I’m well aware that the world we’re living in is more expensive than ever, and being able to spend money on beauty products is a huge luxury.
In fact, according to new research carried out by E.l.f Cosmetics, 55% of people surveyed said that they’d like to spend less on beauty products than they currently do.
And that’s where the joy of the high street comes in. Now, more than ever there, there are so many incredible make-up brands creating truly great formulas at a fraction of the cost of their competitors. E.l.f Cosmetics is one such example, but I’m also finding myself being more and more excited by innovative products coming from brands like Maybelline, L’Oreal and NYX Professional Makeup.
Here, I’ve rounded up some of my favourite affordable products worth trying if you’re in the market for something new…
Best affordable make-up 2024
Collection Filter Finish Face Duo Contour & Highlight
This contour and highlighter duo is really impressive. The powder formulas are finely milled and glide onto your skin, looking glowy and expensive. If you blind-tested me, I’d never guess it was under £10.
Shop Collection Filter Finish Face Duo Contour & Highlight at Superdrug, £6.99
Maybelline Superlock Brow Glue
For fluffy, brushed-up brows – this brow glue gets 5-stars. It sets your eyebrows in place without looking crunchy or flaking throughout the day.
Rimmel Extra Super Lash Lengthening Mascara
I’ve always believed that Rimmel mascaras are completely underrated. This seriously affordable formula lengthens and lifts in one – and wears throughout the day perfectly.
Shop Rimmel Extra Super Lash Lengthening Mascara at Boots, £4.99
L’Oreal Paris Lumi Glotion
I tried this hero highlighter after it was recommended to me by another beauty journalist. It gives your skin that ‘post-facial’ glow that’s got a radiant sheen without adding too much shine or noticeable glitter. Obsessed.
NYX Professional Makeup Fat Oil Lip Drip Lip Gloss
I’m obsessed with lip oils and this one rivals all of the more expensive formulas. With a juicy doe applicator and smooth, non-sticky texture, it leaves your lips seriously glossy and soft.
Shop NYX Professional Makeup Fat Oil Lip Drip Lip Gloss at Lookfantastic, £7.99
E.l.f Camo Liquid Blush
I love so many of E.l.f’s make-up formulas, but their cream blushers really are something else. They leave your skin looking juicy, soft and smooth – and the pigments are really buildable, so you can go as bold as you like!
