We are thrilled to announce that leading beauty authority Lisa Eldridge – the go-to make-up artist for the likes of Alexa Chung and Kate Winslet – has joined the Stylist Live line-up where she will be in conversation with cult beauty journalist Sali Hughes.
Stylist Live is a four-day festival of cocktails, culture, catwalks and conversation hosted by Edith Bowman and Dawn O’Porter on Thursday 15 – Sunday 18 October 2015.
Lisa will share her in-depth knowledge of what makes the industry tick, why beauty videos have exploded online and the interesting facts she unearthed while researching her upcoming book Face Paint: The Story of Makeup before answering your questions in an audience Q&A.
The duo will be in conversation on Saturday 17th October at 4pm. Tickets are from £25 each and you can secure your place at live.stylist.co.uk
In anticipation of the event, we caught up with Lisa Eldridge, and asked her for some pearls of wisdom ahead of the big event…
Why is beauty important?
Firstly, there’s a sense of tribal allegiance – it’s very much about who you are and the group to which you belong. But it’s also a way of conveying and expressing yourself. Criticism of women wearing make-up goes back thousands of years but now we have the freedom to wear false lashes if we want or red lipstick if we want. That’s liberating.
How did you get started on YouTube?
I wanted to share my knowledge as a make-up artist through something more homemade than the smoke and mirrors of my day job. I didn’t even know anyone knew about my videos until they would say, “I told my mum/sister/friend about you,” and that’s how it grew. It was very organic.
What’s the best thing about it?
I treasure the community because it’s a two-way street. I’ve even had the girls from Downton Abbey text me and say, “I used your smoky eye tutorial”. It’s surreal.
What advice would you give to new beauty vloggers?
Don’t go into it thinking, ‘I want to be a celebrity and make loads of money’. Be authentic: find something you’re passionate about, have integrity and play up something that’s different about you. If there’s no-one else like you, people will want to watch.
What’s the biggest beauty myth out there?
One size fits all. Every face is completely different, every technique is different on every face.
