The season of style experimentation is here – this is how to make the most of it…
While summer was all about yielding to a permanently sweaty face (why bother wearing make-up only for it to evaporate as soon as you cross the threshold) and wearing as little as possible to beat the heatwave, the colder months hold more promise when it comes to your aesthetic choices.
With the welcome return of layers and the sartorial selections they offer, and the chance to sport some bolder beauty looks that will actually hang around on your skin, we’re getting ready to make our look as ultra as possible this season.
Here’s how to make the trends you’ll be seeing everywhere this season work for you…
1. Get creative with colour
If you’re keen to work more colour into your wardrobe but fear looking like a palette of primary shades, the key is to work on one piece at a time.
“The transition into autumn offers a great opportunity to embrace bold and bright hues with new styles and silhouettes,” says Stitch Fix UK styling team lead, Farrah-May Archer Boadi.
“Eye-catching colours can be simple to style in your own unique way. A great place to start is by incorporating colour using just one core piece of clothing that suits your style. For example, why not start with a brightly coloured patterned dress, from the likes of Nobody’s Child or Whistles, which you can layer under a jacket and team with boots to suit the season.
“Or, opt for a statement trouser from the likes of YAS or French Connection – pairing them with a dark tee. This is an easy way to add colour to your ensemble while still remaining appropriate to the season.”
2. Fall back in love with lipstick
While the last few years have seen us relegate bright lipstick to the back of the make-up roster, this season is all about the comeback.
Maximalism has been a key beauty feature on catwalks this season and your go-to tool to work it into your look is a trusty red lipstick, whether it’s a high shine gloss or a classic glamour matte finish. When it comes to a high impact red lip, it’s all about the prep.
Make the most of the air time your smile will be getting thanks to your punchy red lip look, and kick things off with the Colgate Max White Ultra Toothpaste range, which uses revolutionary whitening technology.
Pop it on your shelf next to your beauty essentials and feel the warming sensation of the deep absorbing oxygenated action as it lifts surface and deep set stains. Enamel-safe, it promises a whiter smile in just three days.*
As for the rest of your look, keep it simple with a moisturising mist and dabs of highlighter on the cheekbones and brow bones for a fresh and confident look that lets the lips take centre-stage.
3. Go simple but strong with your hair
If you’re growing weary of your tried and tested tonged look or want to use autumn as the opportunity to try something more exciting, the good news is this season’s trends are all about simple but high impact styles.
“This season people will be looking for something simple but glamorous,” explains celebrity hair stylist, Michael Douglas.
“I’d suggest a sleek and tight ponytail, worn high up the head towards the crown. Use a blow-dry spray or an oil smoothing spray on dry hair. This creates almost a wet look, the epitome of disco glamour.
“Natural air-dried shorter styles are also becoming very popular. Use a dry cream from JVN or OGX, depending on budget, and apply through damp hair and then sculpt with your hands, keeping the hair flat to the head but creating shapes – think finger waves.
“To speed up the drying process use a hairdryer with a diffuser on a low speed, high heat setting and occasionally tease the hair with your fingers, allowing the style to come to life as it dries.”
4. Embrace accessories
Adding accessories to your look doesn’t have to mean going full Clueless, with a personal wardrobe dedicated to all manner of wild and wonderful adornments (unless you’re into that, in which case, go wild).
“Accessories are a great way to go bold with your look,” explains Archer. “They can transform a simple, minimalist outfit into something more unique while staying true to your style and personality.
“For the colder months woolier wears, such as hats, gloves and scarves, are my personal option. High street stores such as Mango and AllSaints have some lovely, colourful options.
“They’re the perfect way to add a pop of colour or a different texture to your outfit, pulling together your look to make it all the more bold.”
5. Have fun with eye make-up
While we’re all still not over Euphoria and the many, many looks we quickly became obsessed with, experimental eye make-up is hanging around as a key trend this season and it’s one that’s sure to give your look a bold refresh.
Pick a shimmery, cream-based eyeshadow and swipe it over your eyelids with your finger for an easy glamour-meets-grunge look.
Then, if you feel like taking it up a notch, add a swish of black liquid eyeliner for a nighttime-ready alternative.
