“I’m a beauty editor and this instant, wash-off tan survives all summer scenarios”

Having tried hundreds of fake tans, I can assure you this one ticks all the boxes…

When it comes to fake tanning, I consider myself a bit of a pro. Having worked as a beauty journalist for over 10 years, I’ve tried hundreds of fake tan formulas. I know what to look for, and I know which brands, formulas, and finishes create a natural-looking golden glow. Plus, as someone with very pale skin, I don’t just fake tan in summer; I’m a year-round tanner. For me, it’s the one product that boosts my confidence 365 days a year. However, there are times when my fake tanning schedule gets thrown off, like recently when I found myself about to play padel in the sunshine with zero tan on my legs.

In need of a quick fix, I reached for Vita Liberata’s Body Blur. This instant tan formula acts more like make-up than fake tan, leaving a smoothing, blurring effect on the skin and covering up everything from bruises to visible veins. I’ll admit, I was nervous about using an instant tan before a 90-minute padel session in the sun (think: sweat, chafing, and generally tan-unsafe activities), but I decided to take the plunge.

Thirty minutes into my game, the classic British summertime threw a curveball: a downpour of tropical rain. Filled with dread, I powered through, avoiding any glances at my legs. I was convinced my tan would be washed away, picturing myself looking like one of the soot-covered dogs from 101 Dalmatians.

To my complete shock, my tan stayed put perfectly. There were no blotchy white patches, no drip marks and no orange residue on my white socks – just bronzed, glowy legs as if I had just applied the tan. Once home, I jumped in the shower and washed with a foaming shower gel. The tan instantly melted off, leaving my legs as pale as before. It proved to me that Vita Liberata’s claim of being removed only with warm water and soap really does hold true.

From now on, I won’t stress about missing a fake tan day because I know Vita Liberata’s Body Blur can handle the job just as well. Whether you need a quick fix or a confidence boost, this instant tan really is a game-changer.

While Vita Liberata’s formula is great for those who want to wash their tan off at the end of the day, I know that many people will be searching for something with a little more staying power. If that’s what you’re after, fear not – these are the five fake tan formulas that I really rate…

For foolproof application and long-lasting colour, this Coco & Eve mousse is one of my all-time favourites. It dries easily and has a delicious tropical mango and guava scent that doesn’t smell too ‘fake tanny’ as it develops.

Iconic London Prep-Set-Tan Mousse

I won’t lie to you… I had reservations about this tanning mousse from Iconic London but after just one use I was hooked. Its formula is clear (meaning it won’t transfer onto your sheets or clothes) but develops into a really natural-looking, golden tan. Plus, it has pearlescent pigments in the formula to help you glow while it develops – genius.
