If your hair is looking lacklustre and dull right now, it might be worth making some simple changes to your haircare routine…

When the seasons change, we often feel an urge to switch things up in our daily lives, too. Maybe you swap out your go-to moisturiser for a richer, thicker texture or lean more towards hearty soups and comfort food. Either way. the transition into the colder months has us rethinking more than just our outfit choices.

And while we all know that our skincare routine can benefit from a seasonal switch up, it turns out that our hair could also benefit from a cold-weather refresh.

“In autumn, hair can feel dryer due to the contrast of cold, damp weather outside and warm, dry indoor environments,” explains hairstylist Tom Smith. “This causes the hair to lose vital lipids and natural oils, making the mids and ends of the hair more prone to tangles, dryness and dullness.”

While nourishing hair masks can help, they won’t instantly solve the problem. “Sometimes overuse of masks and serums during this time can leave the hair heavy and lifeless so a balance of hydration and periodic resetting of the hair is important,” Smith explains.

Swap to a richer conditioner

“In winter, it’s a good idea to upgrade your regular conditioner for a more intense hydration mask, even if you don’t have time to leave it on any longer when washing your hair,” explains Smith. “The more concentrated ingredients will help to add extra softness and moisture to your hair. I like Evo Great Hydrator or Olaplex No.8 for this.”

Try a clarifying shampoo

“If your hair just doesn’t seem to be behaving properly and you’ve tried using a mask, resetting the hair with a detoxing or clarifying shampoo like Olaplex No.4C before following with a mask can really help to reset things.”

Look for butters and oils

“Higher moisture content and products that contain oils and butters can be helpful to make the hair soft and silky. I also recommend using a richer consistency of leave-in product. If you usually use a serum, perhaps consider a cream, as this can help with fluff and frizz.”
