From heavy metal manicures to alternative French tips, these are the nail art trends expected to dominate the autumn months…

As we head towards September, many of us are feeling the pull of a new season – and with it, the urge to refresh our beauty routine. Whether you’re swapping out your skincare, refreshing your wardrobe or having a house clear-out, there’s something about that ‘back-to-school’ September energy that conditions us to try something new. And while we’re at it, there’s no better time to refresh our manicure, too.

This summer was all about bright, bold nail trends that brought a pop of colour to every fingertip. From vibrant neon French manicures to colourful aura nails, the warmer months were all about experimenting with bright colours and fun designs. But as we transition into autumn, nail trends are set to take a more muted and sophisticated turn. Expect to see a shift towards softer tones, paired-back designs and more nuanced takes on nail art. But if you’re someone who likes to get creative with their nails, there’s something for you too. Whether you’re ready to tone things down with a subtle manicure or are looking to push boundaries with something more daring, this season has a nail look for everyone.

From minimalist elegance to statement-making designs, we’ve rounded up some of the biggest nail trends you can expect to see going into autumn, plus all the inspiration pictures you need to take with you into the salon…

Metal detailing

Metallics often make a resurgence in fashion around autumn, but this year the trend is taking over our manicures, too. Think silver French tips that add a sleek, modern twist to the classic manicure, or heavy metal adornments that bring a touch of edge to your nails. Mirror nails are also making a comeback, reflecting the darker, moodier tones of the season with a high-shine finish.

3D nail art

If you’re not ready to give up the boldness of summer just yet, 3D nails are your answer. From jelly nails that add a playful, translucent effect to your fingertips to intricate adornments that bring texture and dimension, this trend is for the bold. Nail art doesn’t get more extreme – or more fun – than this.

Completely clean

For those who prefer a more minimalist approach, the ultra-clean nail trend is for you. With their sheer, barely-there polish, BB nails enhance the natural beauty of your nails while keeping them looking impeccably groomed. The rise of the Russian manicure has also brought an obsession with ultra-polished, perfected nails that ooze sophistication.

Not your average French

Wave goodbye to the brightly coloured French tips of the past few years and say hello to more muted hues. Whether it’s a khaki green, a subtle pop of silver or any shade that’s rich and autumnal, this is the French manicure to see you through until Christmas.

Icing sugar white

White nails are a staple for summer, but as we move into autumn, they’re getting a seasonal update. Icing sugar white is the shade to watch – think milky, diluted whites that offer a softer, more versatile alternative to the stark white of summer. This shade is flattering on all skin tones and gives a fresh, modern twist to a classic look.
