Autumn 2023 is set to serve statement-making looks. From metallic eyes to bold lips, these are the make-up artist-approved trends to try this season.
I don’t know about you, but I feel as though this has been one of the most autumnal summers on record. Rainy days, moody skies, the early shift to my knitted wardrobe. The only thing that has kept me in summer spirit is the strawberry girl aesthetic; thank you, Hailey Bieber.
Autumn is one of my favourite seasons for beauty. Every year, I get excited to return to deeper nail colours and dust off my fuller-coverage formulas. Plus, warm browns and berry tones make my all-time favourite colour palette. But I’m not sure I am ready to say goodbye to summer fun just yet.
You can imagine my excitement, then, when Bobbi Brown’s pro-make-up artist, Hollie Olivia Ellis, told me: “I think this autumn will be more fun than we’ve ever had.” From statement colours covering eyes and lips to a nostalgic return to 80s metallics, I spoke to Ellis to discover the make-up trends you can expect to find all over your social feeds this autumn. Prepare for the season of creativity.
Make a statement
“This autumn is all about statement” explains Ellis. “Berry tones have been going round this summer with the cherry cola lips trend for a juicy glossy finish, I feel that this will transform into a stained berry blurred lip in autumn.”
While Ellis recognises that autumn will always hold a place for timeless warm brown eyes and a nude lip, she notes that “it will definitely be a season to explore new palettes you haven’t tried before. You can expect to see greens, blues, magentas and metallics and used in smoky eyes and bold lips.”
It’s all about the eyes
“Lips have had the limelight throughout summer, so I believe eyes will take centre stage this autumn,” says Ellis. “It’s the season for darker nights and stand-out eyes, and you can expect to see pops of colour and different textures throughout”.
Her go-to look this season? A soft smoky diffused eyeliner. “It’s almost like that soft grunge glam, but softer. Whether it’s an eyeshadow smudged at the edges, or a kohl liner blended out with the fingers, the key is not perfection”.
The 80s called
The 80s was the era of bold, colourful make-up. The aim? To make a statement. Ellis says: “80s trends are making a comeback, so I think this will reflect in our choice of eye and lip colours.”
Ellis will be reaching for 80s foiled silvers to accentuate her eye looks. “With one swipe all over the eyes or just into the inner corners, metallics can make any look stand out from the crowd.”
Soft focus skin
With colder days ahead, Ellis recognises that “most of us will want to cover any redness from the cold while keeping the skin natural”.
Enter, soft-focus skin. “Coming into autumn, longevity and smooth-looking skin is key,” Ellis says. She will aim to create a second-skin finish to provide a soft base, opting for ingredients that nourish the skin.
