Move over papaya and pumpkin because there’s a new fruit extract on the skincare scene. This time it’s all about apple.
The world of skincare ingredients can often feel overwhelming – even for those who know their alpha hydroxy acids from their hyaluronic acids.
Of course, there are the heavy hitters that are widely regarded as the gold standard in skincare (retinol, we’re looking at you) and the lesser-known but equally vital ingredients like ceramides that nourish and protect. But one category that’s been steadily gaining momentum is fruit-based ingredients. While you might already be familiar with the benefits of papaya enzymes and pumpkin extract, there’s a new powerhouse ingredient cropping up in everything from exfoliants to lip balms: apple extract.
With its natural antioxidants and protective abilities, apple extract is proving to be a game-changer when it comes to skin renewal. So, what exactly is it doing for our skin and is it worth looking out for in your INCI list? Here’s everything you need to know about apple in skincare…
How does apple extract benefit our skin?
Apple extract, particularly when using apple stem cells, is packed with antioxidants that help protect our skin from environmental damage while also upping the skin’s levels of hydration. “Apple stem cells are one of the most interesting ingredients in the mix, boasting remarkable longevity properties for our skin,” explains Elizabeth Starr, executive director of product development at Origins. “[The stem cells we use in our Youthtopia collection] are derived from the rare Uttwiler Spätlauber, a Swiss apple known for its resilience and long-lasting freshness.”
“The idea is simple but powerful – the same longevity properties that keep the apple from shrivelling up in storage are applied to our skin, helping to kickstart the renewal process.”
Not only do apple stem cells help to promote surface cell turnover, but they can also help maintain the skin’s barrier function – keeping it hydrated, healthy-looking and smooth. Then there are the antioxidants found in apples – such as quercetin and vitamin C, which are known for their anti-inflammatory and brightening properties. These can also help to protect your skin from free radicals, which can cause fine lines and hyperpigmentation.
“Apple stem cells can help to promote cell renewal,” explains Starr. “By encouraging skin turnover, apple extract helps to reveal fresher, healthier skin, making it an ideal ingredient for those looking to target dullness, uneven texture and fine lines.”
Is apple in skincare suitable for everyone?
Apples contain malic acid – a natural alpha hydroxy acid that can gently exfoliate the skin. However, malic acid is also great at hydrating the skin, so it’s generally well tolerated by all skin types, including reactive or sensitive skin.
