From the Italian to the nape neck, bob hairstyles are absolutely everywhere in 2024. But it turns out that the most popular bob remains a 90s classic…

There’s no denying that bob hairstyles have made a massive comeback this year, with a new bob variation catching our attention almost weekly. From the sophisticated power bob to the effortlessly chic French bob, there’s a bob for everyone, regardless of hair type and personal style.

But amid the resurgence, one style stands out as the most searched for: The Rachel. According to a recent hair report from Cosmetify, this iconic 90s style (made famous by Jennifer Aniston on Friends) remains the most popular hairstyle almost three decades after its debut, garnering 368,600 Google searches annually.

What is ‘The Rachel’ haircut?

The Rachel is characterised by its face-framing long layers and soft curtain bangs, typically worn with a middle parting.

“Nineties layers, also commonly known as The Rachel, are having a revival this summer,” explains Laura Elliott, head stylist at Neäl & Wølf. “This haircut is timeless and elegant. If you are looking to have the same chic layers popularised by Jennifer Aniston, it’s important to curl the layers inwards towards the face. Similar to the butterfly cut, this style is loved for the movement and texture created by the layers, so using large, heated rollers will provide the volume and curl this look requires.”

Who does ‘The Rachel’ suit?

The layered look of The Rachel is perfect for anyone aiming to create the illusion of fuller, healthier hair without necessarily sacrificing too much length. This cut adds volume and dimension while simultaneously removing damage and split ends.

“One of the reasons this type of cut is so popular is because it can be adapted to any hair texture and works well on almost all hair types,” says Elliott. “If your hair is on the thinner side, this look can also work well in creating volume.”

How to style ‘The Rachel’

“Before making the chop, it is important to decide where you want the shortest layer to fall on your face, as this will affect your desired look,” advises Elliott.

“When it comes to styling The Rachel, you can either let your hair air dry or blow dry it out. To create more volume, I suggest blow drying, lifting the hair up, and finishing with a texturising spray. If you want to accentuate your layers, I would recommend styling with a volumising mousse, like Neäl & Wølf Enhance Volumising Mousse, which enhances body and shine. Top it off with a nourishing hair oil for a glossy and velvet finish.”
