From curtain bangs to a modern mullet, here’s how 70s hair trends are making a summer resurgence…
Like fashion, beauty trends often have a habit of coming back around and this summer, it’s the 1970s that are having a major moment. From Sabrina Carpenter’s cowgirl curtain bangs (think Farrah Fawcett with a Gen Z twist) to the rise of the modern mullet and a fresh take on disco curls, it seems like everywhere you look, there’s a nod to the iconic decade. But this isn’t about dressing up like you’re headed to an Austin Powers-themed party – these hairstyles are being reimagined in a way that feels modern and fresh.
“The 70s was a time of liberation and experimentation, which feels particularly relevant today,” explains hairstylist Gemma Smithson. “After everything we’ve been through the past few years, there’s something about the effortless, slightly undone glamour of 70s hair that just feels right. It’s about embracing imperfections, celebrating natural textures and tapping into that carefree spirit,” she says.
Whether you’re growing out a pixie cut and experimenting with a modern mullet or embracing your layers with a big bouncy blowdry, there’s a 70s trend that’ll work for you.
“There’s been a real celebration of diversity in hair types and textures over the past few years,” says Smithson. “Disco curls, for instance, are more than just a retro throwback – they’re a celebration of natural curls and coils in all their glory. And with curtain bangs and layered cuts offering a softer entry into the trend, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to embracing a 70s look.”
So, whether you’re ready to go all-in with a full Farrah flick or just fancy dipping your toes into the trend with a subtle 70s-inspired tweak, there’s plenty of inspiration to be found. Here are 15 of our favourite looks to inspire your next cut…
