Eclipse season has arrived – here’s what it means for you

It’s thought that the moon’s movements can have an impact on our emotions. So what does it mean when there’s a lunar eclipse?

Are you in tune with the moon? If you’re already a moon superfan, you’re likely all in on your full moon rituals and moonbathing sessions. If you’re not quite lunar-aware, you might occasionally ask your one astrological pal what’s going on up in the sky and how it can explain the chaos of your day at work (annoyingly, we can’t always blame it on mercury retrograde).

Wherever you fall on this moon-loving spectrum, it’s unlikely you give much thought to eclipse season. Full moons are easy to spot and keep in the back of your mind – they happen every month, after all. Eclipses, however, are rarer, and thus feel a tad more mysterious. But the periods of time between eclipses? Well, they tend to go almost entirely under the radar.

But astrologers believe that eclipse season – the period between two consecutive eclipses – can have a dramatic effect on us. So perhaps we should be paying this a little more attention.

When is eclipse season?

First of all, what does an eclipse actually mean? Simple: it’s whenever one celestial body moves into the shadow of another, obscuring it from view. A lunar eclipse is when the moon is in the shadow, while a solar eclipse happens when the sun is in the shade. Easy!

In October 2023, there will be not one but two eclipses: the first, a solar eclipse in Virgo on 14 October, and the second a lunar eclipse in Pisces on 28 October. Eclipse season is the period between these dates.

What does eclipse season mean for us?

It’s thought that our thinking and emotions can be affected during eclipses. The experts at Moonly, an app that helps to keep you updated on the moon’s phases, say that when an eclipse happens, our “critical thinking is impaired, behaviour can be impulsive and mental state can be unstable”.

“People are susceptible to momentary impulses,” they continue. “It is more difficult to control emotions, to react appropriately to other people and events. At the same time, eclipses carry the energy of transformation and rebirth. They refer us directly to our karmic lessons and bring us closer to the subconscious mind.”

In short: eclipses can be a little chaotic. Be warned. But what about the in-between period – eclipse season –which this time will last two weeks?

This is a time when unexpressed emotions and subconscious beliefs come to the surface, so you might suddenly feel more teary than usual or be more aware of limiting beliefs that have been holding you back. None of this is bad! However, an awareness of what can come up is helpful, and turning our thoughts into action can be too. If, for example, your stress levels feel heavier than usual, how can you tweak your daily routine to manage that? If your intuition is telling you a friendship isn’t working, what will you do about that?

5 tips on how to spend eclipse season

The team at Moonly recommends keeping these five things in mind during the next couple of weeks.

Stay calm and aware

“Try not to get involved in conflicts and arguments. Take a pause to avoid hasty decisions and impulsive reactions. Remember that people around you are also affected by the eclipses, so try not to take sudden aggression or emotional instability personally.”

Turn your attention to internal processes and self-knowledge

“Keep track of feelings and thoughts that arise. Devote time to meditation and self-development or keep an emotions journal. Try to follow a daily routine, incorporate fruits and vegetables in your diet, and take good care of your health.”

Finalise processes that are no longer relevant

“Revise your to-do list and schedule things you haven’t gotten around to in a while. Throw out or give away things you don’t need. It’s also great to do volunteer work in a field that resonates with you.”

Avoid starting new projects

This is a time to finish things off, not get started on new big plans. Perhaps hold off on that big DIY job until next month.

Make sure your home space feels comfortable

“Keep your home clean, especially your sleeping area. You can make your bed with fresh linens, light an aroma lamp or incense and put a pleasant night light on.”
