Of the 12 signs of the zodiac, Libra is most commonly associated with balance. Born between 23 September and 22 October, Libras are known for their measured approach to life and constant need for equilibrium. An air sign, Libra is appropriately symbolised by the scales of justice (as carried by Themis, the Greek goddess of divine law and justice).

So, what really makes a Libra a Libra? We spoke to astrologist Agne Aurelia to find out everything about the typical Libra personality and how these characteristics play into a Libra’s weaknesses, love life, career and friendships. 

What is the personality of a Libra?

According to Aurelia, Libras tend to be the “charmers” of the zodiac. “Experts in negotiations and networking, Libras know how to attract the right opportunities,” she says. “Constantly seeking balance Libras love to walk the middle path and avoid extremes.” In other words, Libras embody the scales that symbolise the star sign.

Diplomatic

A defining trait of the Libra star sign is the dedication to fairness. Libras are committed to order and justice, so they never like to see anyone being cheated or undersold. A Libra will always stand up for what they think is right and never let emotion get in the way of coming to a fair conclusion.

Good listener

Libras know how to shut up and listen. They take in what people tell them and really digest it before they respond. 

Idealist

As sticklers for fairness, Libras tend to have strong, firm ideals that they stick to no matter what.

Social

Libras love to be around other people and are often considered to be extroverts. They are often the ones to make plans and can even feel a little uneasy when they’re alone for too long. However, as lovers of balance, Libras need alone time in between social gatherings.

Like every zodiac sign, some of the Libra traits may sometimes seem like weaknesses in certain situations. Here are a few of the traits that can sometimes present as negative.

Indecisiveness

Sometimes, Libra’s dedication to balance and fairness can make it hard for them to make decisions. Instead of quickly forming opinions, they tend to ruminate over all of the factors before making up their minds. While this can often be a good trait, in some instances, it can prove a little annoying.

Needy

Libras can sometimes seem a little needy in their relationships. This is because they like to feel balanced and safe in a relationship and can sometimes seek out extra reassurance.

Stubbornness

In some cases, Libras may become stubborn. Libras can be set in their ways and they can struggle to see things from a different perspective.

What are Libra love traits?

In terms of romance, Libras aren’t exactly easygoing. “Probably the pickiest out of all, Libras are constantly reviewing their options when looking for an ideal partner,” says Aurelia. “Ruled by Venus, they love a partner who shares the same lifestyle and is ready to merge friendship groups.” 

Libras seek out mental stimulation from their partners. “They need someone they can spend hours talking with about arts and culture,” she says. “Libras are an air sign, so they should be careful when coupling up with an emotional type. They want someone who will keep their cool and resolve problems with an open conversation.”

What do Libras look for in friendships?

In their social lives, Libras like to keep busy and stimulated. “Libras love the high life,” says Aurelia. “These Venusian natives surround themselves with talented and creative people with whom they can indulge in a life of beauty and art.” 

Libras also make great friends because of their listening skills. “Libras are great listeners. Able to see the bigger picture, they give good advice, but expect the same in return,” she says.

What should Libras look for in a career?

Libras feel happiest when they are passionate about their work and when they’re not isolated for too long.

“Libras want a career to feed their passion for culture and socialising,” Aurelia says. “They need enough space to indulge in their job as if it were one of their hobbies. They seek admiration and accomplishment but not at the price of their lifestyle.” 

Artistic roles tend to suit Libras rather than rigid, demanding jobs. “Talent agent, art dealer, a creative – that’s more like it,” she says.

Libra compatibility

Which signs are most compatible with Libras?

“Other air signs such as Aquarians and Geminis speak the same love language as Libras,” says Aurelia. “Leos and Libras love to live a life of luxury-fuelled parties. The opposition sign, Aries, can be a hit or miss.”

Another hit-or-miss sign is Taurus. “A notable mention is the other Venusian sign, Taurus: both signs love the finer things in life but can clash when it comes to socialising,” she says.
