The last full moon of the year is coming. Here’s what it means for you.

This December, we’ll get our final full moon of the year. Often referred to as the ‘cold moon’, the last full moon of the year is associated with taking stock and making preparations for the year to come.

This year, the full moon is in Taurus, and coincides with the retrograde of Mars and Mercury. “Everything that happens during the full moon period from 14–16 December has a profound impact on future events and karmic work,” says Natasha Astrobalance, astrologer at the Moonly app.

She predicts that this full moon will be a period of confusion and reshuffling as we all find ourselves confronting our problems in a new light. Here’s how you can prepare for what is coming.

When is the full moon in Taurus?

The next full moon falls on 15 December. In the UK, the moon will reach its peak at 4.02 am precisely.

“The moon will be in Taurus, its sign of maximum strength, in conjunction with retrograde Jupiter, which has been in Taurus since May 2024 and will remain there until May 2025,” explains Astrobalance of the moon’s position. “The full moon will be strongly influenced by retrograde Mars and Mercury, while the sun will traverse a challenging segment between Scorpio and Sagittarius.” In other words, there’s a lot going on to influence the energy of this full moon.

Surface solutions and intellectual games won’t suffice

What is the significance of the upcoming full moon?

With the multiple retrogrades happening around this full moon, it will be a period when we are encouraged to seek new solutions to old problems.

“The retrograde phase and planetary positions highlight the need to seek new ways of solving familiar problems, transforming patterns in relationships, work, family, finances and daily life,” she says. “The root of events often lies in patterns inherited from one’s family of origin, in the relationship with the mother and in the perception of resources – whether there is an excessive attachment to material security for the sake of feeling safe and what one is willing to sacrifice for illusory safety and sensory pleasures.”

Focus on what makes you uncomfortable and consider what you have been avoiding. “Understanding what one is running from, what brings discomfort and how to resolve it at the root is crucial,” she says. “Surface solutions and intellectual games won’t suffice; deep work is required.”

Astrobalance suggests that the danger with this full moon is that it brings with it “the tendency to avoid dealing with complex emotions or seeking new solutions by retreating into familiar pleasures and entertainments that are no longer relevant”. She adds: “Alcohol and interactions with people who are no longer part of your close circle, referred to as ‘friends’ only by old habit, are especially harmful during this time.”

How will it affect you?

“This is a complex time with significant energetic potential,” Astrobalance adds. She explains that it may bring up troubling emotions. “Communication, plans and financial decisions may become confusing, as this period actively reshuffles these areas of life. The retrograde phases and the abundant energy of the full moon can turn everything upside down.”

In other words, 15 December is not the time to make any big decisions in your relationships, career or finances. Instead, it’s the time to cautiously explore new ways of thinking. “It is perfect for exploring new approaches, seeking unconventional solutions and expanding your worldview, skills and opportunities,” she says.

This will lay the groundwork for you in the year to come.

“Later, when the retrograde phases end and we pass through the March eclipse corridor, the skills acquired during this time will become valuable in an entirely new chapter of events starting in May 2025,” says Astrobalance. “For now, it is crucial not to remain trapped by karmic limitations but to break free from destructive, outdated patterns, unlock your creative potential, enrich your family, career and finances with fresh perspectives and remain open to internal transformation.”

How should you prepare?

Getting ready for this period of upheaval is key. The first step is to prepare to listen to what your emotions are telling youl.

“Surround yourself with harmonising influences in advance,” she suggests. “Massages, home or salon spa treatments, the company of loved ones, a psychologist, creative activities, cheerful and kind films, restful sleep and proper nutrition” are all on the list of ways to prepare. “Practices like Moon and Mars mantras, lighting candles, dancing and engaging in physical activities are especially beneficial,” she adds.

Surround yourself with harmonising influences

It can also be beneficial to prepare for the feeligns of unease that may arise. “Work on feelings of fear, insecurity and uncertainty,” she says. “By cultivating a basic trust in the universe and connecting with the infinite source of love within your heart, you will avoid making dangerous mistakes under the influence of emotions.”

While the coming full moon may feel like a major energetic shift, trust that it will be worth it. As Astrobalance says: “The full moon will pass, but the energies you generate will remain in your life.”
