Marilyn Monroe fitted much into her 36 years - from nude model to Hollywood superstar, the actress married three times, and was never far from controversey.

Her glamorous yet tragic life has led to many portrayals of the star in film, print and art. With the latest - My Week With Marilyn - in cinemas now, we take a look back at Monroe's life in the gallery below.

    Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jean Mortenson (later changed to Baker) on 1 June 1926 to single mother Gladys Pearl Baker. Her birth certificate lists her father as Martin Edward Mortensen, but Monroe never acknowledged him as a parent. She used to joke and pretend that Clarke Gable was her father.

    After being passed from foster home to foster home, Monroe was sent to live with her Aunt Ana in Van Nuys where she met and fell in love with Texan policeman James Dougherty.     While her husband was serving in the Merchant Marine, Marilyn began working at the Radio Plane Munitions factory, where army photographer David Conover noticed her and photographed her for Yank magazine. She signed up with The Blue Book Modelling Agency, and after being told that fair haired models were more popular, bleached her brunette hair to golden blonde - a decision which would prove pivotal in her career.

    Marilyn’s successful modelling career caught the eye of Ben Lyon, a 20th Century Fox executive who arranged a screen test for her. It was Lyon who suggested the name Marylin Monroe saying that it was “sexy, had a nice flow and would be lucky due to the double M”.

    Monroe's final film, The Misfits, was written by her husband, Arthur Miller, and commenced filming in the Nevada desert during 1960. The process was plagued by upset - in addition to frequent rows between Miller and Monroe (with Marilyn reportedly turning to sleeping pills and alcohol), other cast members Montgomery Clift, Thelma Ritter and Clark Gable all suffered from illness. Soon after the film wrapped, Monroe filed for divorce from Miller and Gable died of a heart attack.
