Canine treats on demand in London park

23 Apr 2013

Never has there been quite so much excitement in the dog world than when a canine vending machine descended on London's Clapham Common last week.

The gadget - the first of its kind to be designed especially for pooches - is the brainchild of Purina dog food brand Bakers Complete.

They created a machine whereby dogs are challenged to pull a bone-shaped lever with their mouths to release a ball. The canine customers are then encouraged to fetch the ball and replace it in the ball slot to discharge a delicious 200g sample of dog food.

The ball action is supposed to mimic the coin mechanism of an actual vending machine and, as you can see from the video below, created a fair amount of competition and intrigue among the dogs of Clapham Common.

Pugs, Labradors, Spaniels, Jack Russells and more lined up to give the machine a whirl, cheered on by their enthusiastic owners. The challenge even resulted in some impressive gymnastic moves from certain competitors, so keen were they to get their paws on the prize.

Peter Neville, an animal expert who worked on the scheme, said "What a great day for dogs! Imagine stumbling across a doggy vending machine that adds challenge and excitement to your run in the park."

Take a look at how the dogs got on with the world's first fido vending machine, below, and let us know your thoughts on Twitter.
