Find your perfect home hair dye

After years of colour disasters, there is a new wave of DIY dyes. But how good are they really?

We ask Garnier colour ambassador Lyndell Mansfield to put it to the test...

If Your Natural Shade Is Blonde But You Would Like To Go:

COOLER: Precision foam colour in 9A light ash blonde. This dye’s non-drip consistency makes it very easy to use and the ash tones will lift your natural colour by two shades. £9.99, John Frieda

DARKER: Casting Crème Gloss in 8304 Sweet Honey. This home hair dye gives fair tones a multifaceted dark honey hue and only takes half and hour to fully develop. £6.49, L'Oreal Paris

WARMER: Olia Permanent Hair Colour in 7.0 Dark Blonde. Adds just a hint of warm vanilla tones to naturally fair hues. Plus it’s ultra hydrating, so great for dry or damaged hair too. £6.99, Garnier

If Your Natural Shade Is Brunette But You Would Like To Go:

COOLER: Nutrisse Nourishing Foam in 6.35 Rich Mahogany Brown. Slightly cooler tones of brown give hair a softer, lighter hue. It comes with a hydrating conditioner you’ll love. £5.10, Garnier.

DARKER: Precision Foam Colour in 4BG Dark Chocolate Brown. The mousse texture of this dye makes it fuss- and mess-free and delivers maximum shine to the hair. £9.99, John Frieda.

WARMER: Olia Permanent Hair Colour in 5.5 Mahogany Brown. With hints of red as well as deep brown this is a great shade to add autumnal warmth to brown hair. £6.99, Garnier.

If Your Natural Shade Is Black But You Would Like To Go:

COOLER: Féria by Préférence in Starry Night. Adding a slight hint of blue-black to dark hair makes a subtle coolness appear, which looks great on warmer skintones. £6.99, L'Oreal Paris.

DARKER: Olia Permanent Hair Colour in 2.0 black. This jet-black shade will add even more shine and gloss to the hair and will also help to camouflage any greys you might have. £6.99, Garnier.

WARMER: Live Color XXL Unlimited Gloss in 880 Tempting Chocolate. This black shade with just a hint of brown has special technology to prevent colour washing off easily. £5.49, Schwarzkopf.

If Your Natural Shade Is Afro But You Would Like To Go:

COOLER: Live Color XXL Colour Intense in 90 Cosmic Blue. The blue tone penetrates deep into the hair and stops dark tones looking flat. £5.49, Schwarzkopf.

DARKER: Olia Permanent Hair Colour in 1.0 Deep Black. Probably the darkest black that you can buy. It can also add some serious shine to Afro hair. £6.99, Garnier.

WARMER: Precision Foam Colour in 3VR Deep Cherry Brown. The mousse consistency sinks into the hair meaning your colour will last longer. £9.99, John Frieda.
